Role Overview
An established full-service law firm in downtown Ottawa is looking to add an Employment Associate Lawyer to its expanding practice. This position suits a driven legal professional with a strong interest in employment law who can perform well in a busy, service-oriented environment. The role centers on delivering practical advice and strategic guidance to clients on a broad mix of workplace matters, while also supporting senior lawyers on litigation matters when required.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide advice to clients from a variety of industries on employment law topics such as employment standards, human rights, and occupational health and safety.
- Prepare and assess employment contracts, workplace policies, and related legal documents.
- Advise clients on employee rights and obligations, including issues connected to termination of employment.
- Assist senior counsel with employment litigation, including preparation for matters before courts, arbitration boards, labour boards, and tribunals.
- Partner with the corporate group on employment issues that arise in transactions.
- Build and maintain positive client relationships by offering timely, practical, and commercially minded legal advice.
- Handle files on an independent basis while keeping work accurate, well organized, and aligned with high client-service standards.
Requirements
- Juris Doctor (J.D.) or Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.).
- Active member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario.
- 5–7 years of post-call experience in employment law, gained in a law firm or in-house setting.
- Strong background advising employers on workplace issues and employment-related risk.
- Experience handling employment disputes such as wrongful dismissal, human rights claims, employment standards issues, and restrictive covenant matters.
- Solid understanding of employment law principles and current best practices.
- Strong drafting and advisory capability, especially for employment agreements and workplace policies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong client-service mindset with the ability to develop long-term relationships.
- Comfort managing several priorities in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
- Highly organized with close attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a collaborative team.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and legal practice management systems, including document management and billing tools.
