Job description

Role overview

The Elevator Mechanic will take charge of servicing, troubleshooting, and repairing elevator mechanical and supporting electrical systems to keep Embassy elevators certified, licensed, and running without interruption. This role reports to the Elevator Supervisor.

Key duties

  • Maintain a work environment where safety remains the top priority at all times.
  • Follow all Environmental Health & Safety and Quality Assurance standards, and supply any needed information or records to support proper legal and operational documentation.
  • Diagnose faults in brakes, motors, switches, and signal/control circuits using test lamps, ammeters, voltmeters, and related testing tools.
  • Strip down faulty equipment and restore functionality by repairing or replacing parts such as locks, gears, cables, and defective safety components.
  • Apply lubrication to bearings and other moving parts to reduce wear and friction.
  • Install or service transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems, and other transmission equipment.
  • Work from blueprints, technical drawings, layout plans, and manufacturer manuals to identify and isolate equipment issues.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance according to set schedules, operating procedures, and warranty requirements, and recommend improvements to the maintenance program when needed.
  • Use trade-standard instruments such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, continuity testers, feeler gauges, and frequency counters to test equipment.
  • Take on other assigned tasks and project work as required.

Required background and knowledge

  • Hands-on experience reading sketches, engineering drawings, wiring diagrams, and equipment operation and maintenance manuals.
  • Working knowledge of European and/or US electrical codes and accepted trade practices.
  • Understanding of annual maintenance requirements for electrical and mechanical systems.
  • Knowledge of US electrical codes and accepted trade practices.
  • Familiarity with annual maintenance schedules and load-testing methods.
  • A high school diploma or GED is required.
  • An apprenticeship route with a Journeyman’s Certificate, or equivalent field experience, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Otis GEN2 MRL elevators is highly desirable.
  • Prior overseas experience and work in harsh environmental conditions are considered advantageous.
  • Previous experience with Amentum is also a plus.

Work environment and physical demands

  • Regular work involves standing, using hands to handle or feel objects, and speaking or hearing.
  • Frequent movement includes walking, reaching, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and working in awkward or tiring positions.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb, balance, taste, or smell.
  • Frequent lifting of 15-25 pounds, with occasional lifting above 45 pounds.
  • Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, high heat, and vibration.
  • Occasional exposure to wet or humid conditions, working at heights, fumes or airborne particles, outdoor weather, extreme cold, and electrical shock risk.
  • The workplace may be noisy and may involve unsafe or nonstandard conditions that require attention to potential hazards and reporting of safety concerns.
