Role Overview

The Elementary School Counselor is responsible for delivering a broad counseling program that supports students across personal, social, academic, and career-related development. This role employs varied methods such as group and individual counseling, curriculum delivery, student goal-setting, and coordination with faculty to facilitate student success and interpretation of assessment results.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Texas School Counselor Certification.
  • A minimum of two years of teaching or school counseling experience is required.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and lead the counseling program by organizing and executing activities aimed at enhancing students' personal effectiveness, interpersonal skills, health and safety awareness, and preparation for post-secondary readiness.
  • Deliver structured classroom guidance utilizing instructional skills tailored to campus needs.
  • Facilitate individualized planning sessions with students and their guardians on educational, career, and social objectives.
  • Provide responsive counseling services through individual and group sessions, consultation, and referrals.
  • Support overall school counseling program management and collaborate with other educational initiatives.
  • Maintain integrity and service excellence while conducting annual program evaluations.
  • Promote a culture of wellness, parental involvement, achievement recognition, positive behavioral norms, and innovation.
  • Communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.
  • Foster professional and emotional resilience while engaging equitably with all stakeholders.
  • Interpret and uphold policies consistent with district counseling goals.
  • Participate in school operations to enhance effectiveness.
  • Serve as an advocate and collaborator aiding student academic, career, personal, and social development throughout their schooling.
  • Consult with teachers regarding guidance curriculum implementation.
  • Communicate counseling program management and plans to school administrators, staff, parents, and community members.
  • Collaborate with school administration on programs addressing multiple facets of student development.
  • Engage with advisory councils to plan and implement counseling services.
  • Advise students and families on higher education options, course planning, and financial aid availability.
  • Provide training and consultation to parents and staff to support student growth.
  • Commit to ongoing professional development adhering to ethical standards from recognized counseling associations and Texas state requirements.
  • Attend a minimum of two hours annually of ethics training.
  • Perform additional duties assigned by the school principal.

Work Environment and Physical Requirements

  • Use of standard office and instructional equipment including computers and peripherals.
  • Physical activity includes moderate standing, occasional kneeling, bending, squatting, and stooping.
  • Moderate walking required.
  • Light lifting up to 15 pounds regularly.
  • Work involves indoor and outdoor environments, possibly exposed to varying weather conditions and noise.
  • Requires maintaining composure and emotional control amid frequent interruptions and stressful situations.
