Role overview
The Electrical Power Production Technician is responsible for installing, operating, and modifying electrical generating plants as well as ground and mobile power generation equipment.
Key duties
- Set up and run electrical power plants, distribution gear, and automatic transfer panels.
- Verify that equipment is serviceable and ready for use.
- Position and operate equipment such as gasoline, diesel, and turbine engines, generators, switchgear, air compressors, and related auxiliary systems.
- Adapt equipment in line with technical publications and complete operating and repair tasks.
- Confirm that installed systems meet required publications, policies, and directives.
- Inspect, test, and service supporting systems including safety, fuel, lubrication, cooling, air pressure, pumps, regulators, governors, and accessory equipment.
- Read and interpret meters and instruments such as ammeters, voltmeters, frequency meters, synchroscopes, automatic temperature and pressure recorders, and engine gauges for oil, fuel, and coolant.
- Adjust generator-engine systems to keep voltage, current, frequency, and synchronization within proper limits, including multi-generator synchronization.
- Operate high-voltage switches, circuit breakers, rheostats, and other controls on switchboards and distribution panels.
- Carry out electrical power control and distribution work.
- Maintain and repair power generation equipment and automatic transfer panels.
- Perform inspections, assess findings, and decide on corrective actions.
- Identify, log, and diagnose engine and generator issues.
- Troubleshoot faults, inspect parts for wear or damage, and use precision test equipment.
- Remove, repair, and replace faulty components in power generation systems.
- Carry out corrosion control tasks.
- Inspect and replace gauges and meters, and bench-test components and subassemblies.
- Test and calibrate repaired equipment.
- Review performance data and maintenance records to judge maintenance effectiveness.
- Analyze power generation data to help prevent future system failures.
- Advise on installation and repair issues related to electrical power production equipment.
- Solve maintenance-related problems.
- Study layout drawings, wiring diagrams, schematic diagrams, and operating characteristics to guide work.
- Develop and establish maintenance and operating procedures that improve efficiency.
- Maintain operation, inspection, and maintenance records, including meter readings, wear and alignment measurements, fuel use, and other performance data.
- Provide information for reports and suggest changes to correct defects or improve operating practices.
- Follow environmental policies and perform additional duties as assigned.
Education and experience
Candidates should have a high school diploma or equivalent, along with at least 5 years of experience operating and maintaining engines, generators, and distribution components used in electric power production equipment across a range of makes and models. A task-certified 5-Level AAS Power Pro qualification is also required.
Skills and knowledge
The role calls for strong organization, careful attention to detail, the ability to multitask in a fast-moving setting, and a customer-focused approach. Excellent spoken and written communication skills are needed, along with proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. The technician must also be knowledgeable in electronics and electricity, including generation, conversion, transformation, distribution, and utilization; low- and medium-voltage circuits; circuit breakers, switches, fuses, regulators, relays, instruments, and meters; interpretation of instrument readings; wiring diagrams, schematics, drawings, and technical manuals; internal combustion engines; generator and plant maintenance; test equipment usage; safety practices; environmental rules; management basics; and electrical power production repair methods.
Additional requirements
Applicants must hold a valid U.S. driver's license. A valid U.S. passport is preferred. The selected candidate must be able to obtain and keep a valid residency visa for Qatar. The work environment may involve extreme dust, high temperatures, long hours, and exposure to weather and hazardous conditions.
Travel and clearance
This position requires 100% travel in a deployed location. A current DoD Secret Clearance is mandatory and must be maintained.
