Job description
The role
Ko Taku Reo – Deaf Education New Zealand is looking for a permanent, full-time Educational Interpreter to support learners and teaching staff across its Enrolled School Provisions in Hillmorton, Wharenui, and Hagley. In this position, you will interpret and translate within the educational environment so students can understand what is being taught, take part fully, and achieve their learning goals. The role calls for the ability to adjust your interpreting style to suit the teaching approach and the learner’s language level and needs.

The organisation is seeking someone who brings strong commitment to education, communication, and learner success. You should be comfortable working with a wide range of age groups and learning levels, and able to adapt to different situations and requirements.
Key requirements
- Approved New Zealand Sign Language qualifications plus interpreter training
- Prior experience in educational environments, sign language resource development, or translation work is an advantage, though not compulsory
- A valid driver licence
- Self-driven, adaptable, and able to organise and manage your own workload
- Respect for Deaf culture and a good understanding of it
- A learner-focused mindset and a genuine desire to support student needs
- Membership/registration with the Sign Language Interpreters Association of New Zealand
