Job description
About the role
CNN is looking for an Audience Editor to work as a dedicated partner to the Audience Strategy & Insights team. In this position, you will turn audience data into practical editorial decisions, helping the desk understand what is resonating and how to improve coverage, packaging, and distribution. The role combines editorial judgment with performance analysis and is centered on measurable impact.
You will collaborate across Search, Social, Home, Newsletters, Product, and other distribution teams to expand reach, strengthen audience habit, and improve engagement, including for subscribers. You will also work closely with DART (Data, Analytics, Research & Testing) to convert insights into repeatable desk workflows and editorial practices.
What you'll do
- Provide short, useful insights on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis to support coverage planning and story follow-ups.
- Recommend story ideas, angles, and content formats based on search behavior, off-platform audience activity, competitive trends, and demand signals.
- Use both quantitative and qualitative data to influence framing, presentation, and packaging on site/app and through off-platform channels such as search, social, alerts, and newsletters.
- Work with Product and platform partners to identify opportunities in modules, templates, topic hubs, and alert strategies.
- Help increase reach, engagement, and audience habit by aligning desk priorities with audience goals and documenting lessons learned in retrospectives and playbooks.
- Coordinate distribution and packaging with Off-Platform, Distribution, Community, Programming, and Newsletter teams.
- Contribute to regular audience updates and synthesize findings for desk and section reviews.
- Assess the desk’s cross-platform performance and look for growth opportunities in formats and account strategy.
- Coach newsroom teams on strong practices for social, search, and packaging, and run quick experiments while recording the results.
- Improve discoverability by tracking trends, researching audience demand, refining evergreen content, and matching coverage to intent in partnership with Search.
- Support CNN’s editorial mission by using data to inform, rather than replace, journalistic judgment.
What we're looking for
The ideal candidate brings strong newsroom awareness, a solid grasp of audience strategy, and the ability to translate data into clear editorial recommendations. You should be comfortable partnering across editorial, analytics, product, design, and research teams, and be confident guiding journalists on platform-native presentation and distribution.
Experience and qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience in digital journalism, audience strategy, content strategy, or analytics.
- Proven ability to identify coverage, framing, and format opportunities that improve reach and engagement.
- Strong skill in interpreting data and working with analytics partners to shape presentation on and off platform.
- Background working with Search, Social, Home, Community, Notifications, and Newsletter teams.
- Clear, action-focused communication style, with regular participation in audience performance reporting.
- Ability to write and coach social copy tailored to each platform.
- Commitment to journalistic independence and editorial decision-making aligned with mission.
- Working knowledge of search trends, shifts in user intent, and misinformation patterns.
- Strong social platform expertise, including tone, brand voice, and audience stewardship.
- Excellent writing and editing instincts for headlines, display copy, and story framing.
- Comfort with experimentation, iterative improvement, and directional analysis.
- Ability to connect editorial, product, analytics, design, and research perspectives.
- Strong awareness of the competitive landscape and audience attention patterns.
Compensation and benefits
The stated base salary range for this New York role is $77,000 to $143,000 per year.
