Economics Specialist

Job Overview

This role involves providing expert economic analysis and policy support aligned with sustainable development goals to inform and enhance UNDP program design and implementation in Kenya. The specialist will collaborate with government and development partners to deliver evidence-based advice aimed at inclusive economic growth.

Responsibilities

• Advise UNDP leadership and country office management on economic policies and developmental matters.
• Collect, analyze, and interpret economic data to produce high-quality reports promoting equitable growth and human development.
• Contribute analytical input to key strategic planning documents including Common Country Assessments and Country Programme Documents.
• Lead drafting of country program documentation and related reporting.
• Recommend adjustments to UNDP programs to align with national priorities and optimize impact.
• Publish economic reports such as National Human Development Reports and represent UNDP in relevant working groups.
• Advise government stakeholders by offering policy options emphasizing pro-poor and sustainability perspectives.
• Support knowledge sharing and capacity building for UNDP staff and national institutions on economic topics.
• Engage in strategic partnerships and resource mobilization aligned with UNDP goals.
• Conduct research on emerging issues and produce briefing materials for decision-makers.
• Promote UNDP mandate through advocacy, participation in forums, and content creation like blogs and articles.
• Manage events and publications focused on economic issues, act as focal point for UNCT economists group.

Institutional Context

The Economics Specialist reports to the Deputy Resident Representative and works closely with communication specialists and multiple stakeholders to support UNDP’s mission in Kenya.

Qualifications & Experience

• Master's degree or equivalent in Economics or a closely related field preferred; a bachelor’s degree with additional experience will also be considered.
• At least 5 years of relevant experience with a master’s or 7 years with a bachelor’s in economic research, policy analysis, and development project design and evaluation.
• Strong computer skills including MS Office and advanced statistical and web-based management systems.
• Experience liaising with UN agencies, governments, NGOs, and international organizations is desirable.
• Knowledge of capacity building methodologies is an advantage.
• Fluency in English and Swahili required; additional UN language skills considered a plus.
