Job summary

The State of Tennessee is hiring a full-time Driver's License Examiner in Anderson County, Tennessee, with the position based in Oak Ridge. This role focuses on determining applicant eligibility for driver services such as license renewals, replacements, testing, and handgun permits, while also administering vision, written, and road-skills examinations. The selected candidate will also collect and process application data, fees, and related records.

Compensation

Monthly pay ranges from $2,896.00 to $4,331.00, which works out to an annual salary of $34,752.00 to $51,972.00.

Work location

This is an on-site position in Anderson County, TN, with the listed city location as Oak Ridge, TN, under the Department of Safety and Homeland Security.

What you'll do

  • Guide the public on Tennessee driver's license rules, application steps, office hours, fees, and related procedures.
  • Review identifying documents and payment items, confirm their validity, and determine whether applicants are eligible to proceed with testing.
  • Handle cash register counts, reconcile receipts against cash totals, calculate office revenue, and prepare bank deposits.
  • Explain forms and testing procedures, administer vision, written, and road tests, take applicant photos, and record test outcomes in the system.
  • Inspect vehicles for basic roadworthiness and assess applicants' driving performance against traffic safety standards.
  • Maintain licensing records, enter applicant information into the License Information System for Tennessee, and verify accuracy against submitted forms.
  • Support special projects, respond to complex customer questions, handle immigration-related cases and accommodations when needed, and assist with audits, reports, and supply or equipment ordering.

Eligibility and background requirements

Applicants must have education equivalent to graduating from a standard high school and must provide proof of education such as a diploma or transcript. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required, or the applicant must be able to obtain one before appointment. This role also requires completion of a background clearance process, including fingerprint-based and name-based criminal history checks, and candidates must not fall under any of the listed disqualifying offenses under federal transportation security rules. Candidates must also not be under warrant for any disqualifying felony. In addition, Tennessee driver standards apply to positions involving driving duties, including a valid driver's license and a clean driving record for the last five years with no DUI, reckless driving, suspension for moving violations, or more than four moving violations, unless an agency allows an exception based on other factors.
