Job description

About the organisation

NHS Scotland is committed to building a workforce that reflects society and to removing unlawful discrimination. NHS Ayrshire and Arran is one of the 14 territorial NHS Boards within NHS Scotland. The organisation works to a shared purpose: helping people across Ayrshire and Arran live the healthiest life possible. Its values focus on being caring, safe and respectful, and staff are expected to work in a collaborative and considerate way.

Role overview

An opportunity is available for a Domestic Assistant at University Hospital Ayr.

Working pattern

The available posts are permanent and part-time, with the following shift options:

  • Post 1: Saturday 12:30 to 18:00 and Sunday 08:00 to 13:30, totalling 10 hours
  • Post 2: Saturday and Sunday day shift, 08:00 to 14:00, totalling 11 hours
  • Post 3: Saturday and Sunday day shift, 08:00 to 13:30, totalling 10 hours

What the job involves

You will deliver a broad range of cleaning and domestic support services that help clinical teams across Ayrshire and Arran. This work must align with NHS Scotland’s National Cleaning Services Specification and support Healthcare Environment Inspectorate standards as well as Facilities Monitoring Tool targets.

Previous exposure to industrial cleaning equipment or work in a healthcare setting would be helpful, but it is not essential because full training will be provided. The post calls for someone who can use their own initiative, contribute effectively as part of a team, and communicate clearly. Practical ability and strong verbal or non-verbal communication skills are important.

Training and knowledge requirements

Successful candidates will need to attend corporate induction and complete mandatory Learn Pro modules. Departmental training will also be required, including the safe operation of equipment and the correct use of cleaning products. Training and competence are expected in the following areas:

  • Safe systems of work and work schedules
  • Departmental risk assessments, including COSHH, general safety, and moving and handling
  • Codes of practice and infection control guidance
  • Efficient and proper use of materials and equipment
  • Use of personal protective equipment
  • Waste handling
  • Linen bagging policy
  • Security procedures
  • Datix
  • Job shadowing, typically during the first week

Right to work and sponsorship

Anyone employed in the UK must have the correct permission to work, as determined by the UK Visa and Immigration Service. Applicants should make sure they already hold the required right to work, or that the role could be sponsored, before applying. NHS Ayrshire & Arran may be able to sponsor certain roles if the salary threshold and other criteria are met. For part-time roles, the advertised salary would be assessed on a pro-rated basis when checking sponsorship eligibility. Sponsorship is not guaranteed and is considered individually after interview and during pre-employment checks.

Sponsorship is not available for Band 2 posts or bank contracts.
