About the Position
The University of Marburg, established in 1527 and hosting approximately 22,000 students, presents the opportunity to join its Center for Synthetic Microbiology under Prof. Peter Graumann. This part-time doctoral researcher role at 60% workload spans three years starting from 1 November 2026. It is funded externally with remuneration aligned to the public service salary scale E 13 TV-H in the state of Hesse, Germany.
Research Focus
The Graumann group investigates bacterial physiology with high spatial and temporal resolution. This project focuses on understanding the mechanisms by which secreted proteins traverse the cell wall in Gram-positive bacteria. Real-time single molecule tracking of secreted proteins will illuminate secretion dynamics, which is critical for biotechnological applications aimed at optimizing secretion efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and execute an independent and original research project.
- Analyze single molecule dynamics related to bacterial cell walls.
- Utilize super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and single molecule tracking within microfluidic flow systems to observe proteins of varying sizes.
- Study compositional changes in bacterial cell walls during stationary phase in collaboration with international multidisciplinary teams.
- Engage in scientific communication through publications and conference presentations.
- Contribute to academic activities by supporting student courses and seminars.
Eligibility and Candidate Profile
- Master's degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, or chemistry, emphasizing biochemistry or microbiology.
- Understanding of microbial physiology and experience handling microorganisms.
- Competency in molecular biology techniques such as cloning and in biochemical methods including protein purification.
- Curious, highly self-driven, and enthusiastic about developing a personal research project.
- Collaborative team player with strong motivation.
- Experience or interest in fluorescence microscopy and related cell biological methods.
