About the Position

The University of Marburg, established in 1527 and home to around 22,000 students, offers a stimulating research environment. The Research Training Group “Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes” (GRK 2937, “MiNu”), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), seeks a Doctoral Researcher (PhD) to join a three-year, part-time (65% working hours) project starting October 1, 2026 or later. This role focuses on understanding the chemical building blocks of cellular cofactors and nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA across different microbial species with an aim to elucidate fundamental principles and specific adaptations of nucleotide metabolism and modification.

Project Focus and Responsibilities

The position involves contributing to the subproject “Functional characterization of NUDIX hydrolases and their capped RNA substrates in hyperthermophilic archaea,” led by Prof. Dr. Lennart Randau. The research emphasizes studying the catalytic function, regulation, and structural properties of thermostable enzymes. Key duties include:

  • Developing an original, independent research project.
  • Studying the catalytic functions and interactions of recombinant proteins with nucleotides.
  • Conducting in vivo experiments and genetic manipulation of bacterial (E. coli) and archaeal (S. acidocaldarius) model organisms.
  • Characterizing archaeal metabolomes through multidisciplinary collaboration in an international setting.
  • Disseminating research findings via publications and conference presentations.
  • Assisting in student teaching activities and seminars.

Employment Terms

The position lasts for three years, aligned with the requirements for completing a doctoral degree, and follows regulations under the German Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act. Salary and benefits correspond to the public service level E 13 TV-H of the state of Hesse.

Candidate Profile

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, or chemistry, preferably with expertise in biochemistry and microbiology.
  • Practical experience in cultivating and genetic studies of archaeal microorganisms.
  • Skills in molecular biology techniques (e.g., cloning, hydrolase activity assays) and protein biochemistry (e.g., purification).
  • Preferred knowledge of RNA biology in archaea.
  • Strong curiosity, high motivation, and enthusiasm for independently developing research projects.
  • Team-oriented mindset with a passionate approach to scientific inquiry.
