About the Position
The University of Marburg, established in 1527 and hosting approximately 22,000 students, conducts cutting-edge research across scientific disciplines. Within the Research Training Group "Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes" (GRK 2937, "MiNu"), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), we focus on understanding the biochemical building blocks called nucleotides and their roles in microbial species.
This doctoral position is available part-time (65%) with a salary based on TV-H E 13 pay scale for the state of Hesse, Germany. The appointment is for three years, commencing October 1, 2026, or later, aimed to support completion of a doctoral degree.
Research Focus and Responsibilities
- Develop and lead an original research project with significant independence investigating bacterial cell cycle regulation via nucleotides.
- Analyze activation mechanisms of nucleotide-binding proteins in Bacillus subtilis using advanced biochemical techniques.
- Utilize super-resolution fluorescence microscopy and single molecule tracking within microfluidic systems to study dynamic protein behavior.
- Collaborate internationally to characterize alterations in nucleotide pools during the bacterial cell cycle.
- Disseminate research findings through publications and conference presentations.
- Possibly assist in teaching and student seminar sessions.
Candidate Profile
- Master's degree or equivalent in biology, biochemistry, or chemistry with emphasis on biochemistry or microbiology.
- Prior experience working with microorganisms and proficiency in molecular biology techniques such as cloning and protein purification.
- Self-driven and enthusiastic team player with a strong curiosity and commitment to advancing their research.
- Interest or experience in cell biology methods, particularly fluorescence microscopy.
- Preferably has knowledge of programming languages like R or MATLAB.
- Committed to scientific qualification through a doctoral research project in related fields.
