Director of Purchasing

About the Role

This remote leadership position is focused on owning and improving the purchasing function for a U.S.-based organization. The role calls for a seasoned professional who can shape procurement direction, strengthen supplier partnerships, streamline sourcing activities, and make sure goods and services are acquired on time to support business priorities. It is well suited to someone who enjoys building scalable processes, guiding teams, and driving measurable operational improvement.

Key Responsibilities

• Create and roll out the company’s purchasing strategy so it supports broader business goals and day-to-day operational needs.
• Manage core purchasing activities such as supplier evaluation, buy planning, contract handling, and order processing.
• Recruit, coach, and develop a strong purchasing team that works collaboratively and continuously improves.
• Maintain productive supplier relationships that promote quality, reliability, and long-term value.
• Work cross-functionally with Supply Chain, Operations, Manufacturing, Finance, Engineering, Product Management, and senior leaders to keep purchasing aligned with company objectives.
• Design category-based sourcing approaches that improve efficiency and fit changing business requirements.
• Track purchasing results using KPIs and apply data-led insights to improve performance.
• Review market shifts, supplier strengths, and industry changes to uncover opportunities for better sourcing and process enhancements.
• Introduce purchasing policies, governance practices, and standards that strengthen compliance and consistency.
• Drive process improvement efforts, including workflow redesign, systems adoption, and automation initiatives.
• Prepare executive-level updates and strategic recommendations on purchasing outcomes, supplier performance, and areas for improvement.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Operations Management, Finance, or a related discipline; a master’s degree is preferred.
• At least 24 years of progressive leadership experience in purchasing, procurement, sourcing, or supply chain management.
• Demonstrated success in leading purchasing teams and delivering clear operational gains.
• Deep knowledge of supplier management, purchasing operations, contract negotiation, and strategic sourcing.
• Experience overseeing purchasing across multiple product lines or business areas.
• Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management capabilities.
• Solid analytical and strategic thinking skills, with the ability to use data to guide purchasing decisions.
• Hands-on experience with ERP platforms, purchasing tools, supplier management systems, and analytics software.
• Ability to manage change and balance multiple priorities in a fast-moving environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to manufacturing, technology, healthcare, retail, consumer products, distribution, professional services, or similar supply-chain-heavy sectors.
• Experience in enterprise purchasing transformation, supplier performance improvement, or operational excellence programs.
• Background in supporting purchasing operations across multiple locations or global teams.
• Professional purchasing, procurement, or supply chain certifications are an added advantage.
