Job description
About Headway
Headway is on a mission to transform mental healthcare access across the United States by building a system that everyone can utilize. Approximately one in four Americans has a treatable mental health condition, yet the majority of providers do not take insurance, making therapy unaffordable for many. Headway addresses this challenge by automating administrative hurdles like credentialing, claims, and payment reconciliation. Currently, over 75,000 providers nationwide use Headway’s software, serving upwards of 1 million patients.
The company is well-funded and growing rapidly, building comprehensive tools for therapists and redefining the experience of therapy access. Procurement at Headway plays a critical strategic role, influencing the company's operational efficiency, cost management, and ability to provide essential tools.
Role Overview
The Director of Procurement will be instrumental in building and leading the company’s procurement function from the ground up. This is a high-impact role working closely with executive leadership and cross-functional teams, including Finance, IT, Legal, Security, and Compliance. The objective is to establish procurement policies, vendor management strategies, and controls that align with Headway’s growth ambitions and mission-driven focus.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and own the end-to-end procurement framework including intake, approvals, vendor selection, controls, and spend governance; balance centralization and delegation to optimize speed and discipline.
- Lead vendor lifecycle management by crafting standards for sourcing, contracting, renewals, and performance management, empowering department leaders with oversight capabilities and support.
- Drive cost-saving initiatives and enhance spend visibility across categories such as SaaS, AI, cloud services, and professional services; lead complex vendor negotiations and renewal processes.
- Implement and optimize procurement tools and systems including intake platforms, purchase-to-pay (P2P) solutions, contract management, and vendor management software to streamline operations.
- Advise leadership and stakeholders on procurement strategies to ensure governance balances agility, cost control, risk mitigation, and regulatory compliance.
- Recruit and build a high-performing procurement team, defining roles, accountability, and organizational structure that will support Headway’s evolving needs.
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven experience establishing procurement operations from scratch with expertise in procurement policy, approval workflows, spend governance, and vendor management.
- Deep knowledge across procurement categories such as SaaS, AI technologies, and professional services.
- Strong analytical mindset with an ability to understand detailed contract terms and broader spend categories; trusted by business leaders for sound judgment.
- Exceptional relationship-building skills to influence procurement decisions across departments without direct authority.
- Demonstrated success negotiating high-value, complex contracts with favorable terms related to cost, risk, and flexibility.
- Hands-on experience leveraging AI tools to enhance procurement intelligence, analytics, and operational efficiency.
- Ability to implement structured processes rapidly under ambiguity and define clear procurement thresholds and standards proactively.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this role is $200,000 to $265,000 annually, depending on experience, qualifications, and location. Eligible candidates may also receive equity grants.
Comprehensive benefits include equity compensation, medical, dental, and vision insurance, health and dependent care FSAs/HSAs, 401(k) plan, work-from-home stipends, therapy reimbursement, parental leave, fertility benefits, holiday and vacation leave, employee assistance programs, and professional development opportunities.
Diversity and Inclusion
Headway is committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace, encouraging applications from all qualified individuals across races, ethnicities, genders, sexual orientations, ages, nationalities, religions, disabilities, military status, and other backgrounds. Reasonable accommodations are provided to persons with disabilities throughout the hiring process and employment.
