About the Organization

The Cheyenne Animal Shelter (CAS) is the premier community animal resource center serving Cheyenne and Laramie County, Wyoming, for over 50 years. The shelter's mission is to improve the welfare of animals and people through compassion, education, and respect, embracing Socially Conscious Sheltering principles to provide a supportive environment for pets and their families.

Position Overview

The Director of Operations is a key member of the executive team responsible for overseeing daily functions within the shelter. This role involves managing core services such as Animal Care and Placement, Reunification, Facilities Maintenance, Safety, and Post-Adoption Support through integrated third-party platforms. The position offers an exciting opportunity to develop organizational culture, advance operational consistency, and establish robust reporting standards that emphasize data transparency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee shelter operations including financial stewardship of an operating and capital budget exceeding $2 million.
  • Serve as a community and media liaison, representing the shelter at public events and in communications.
  • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with government animal control and service vendors.
  • Ensure safety and maintenance compliance of the 21,000-square-foot facility, nine-acre grounds, and public dog park, acting as Shelter Safety Officer.
  • Provide direct leadership and support to the Shelter Manager, Animal Care Specialist, Foster Care Specialist, and indirectly to about 25 other staff members.
  • Obtain euthanasia certification within 90 days of appointment and be willing to assist operationally as needed.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of five years in management roles with direct staff supervision experience.
  • Bachelor's degree or comparable professional experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Google Workspace, coupled with strong emotional intelligence and conflict management abilities.
  • Basic knowledge of facilities and grounds maintenance.
  • Must be at least 21 years old, possess a valid driver’s license, and pass background and drug screening checks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in animal shelter management and human resources.
  • Advanced degrees in Business, Public Administration, or related disciplines.
  • Certifications such as CAWA, Lean Six Sigma, Project Management, or Organizational Leadership.
  • Familiarity with Fear-Free shelter methods and handling various animal types including companion, exotic, and barnyard animals.
