Job description
About the Company
Avenue Dermatology is a physician-led dermatology platform built around two long-standing Upper East Side practices, Gendler Dermatology and Lewis Dermatology. The organization currently operates two flagship Manhattan sites, has a third location in development, and is actively strengthening the systems, leadership, and operating model needed to support growth through acquisitions and new practice launches. The business runs under an MSO/PC structure and is investing heavily in the operational base required for scaling.
This is a highly visible position, both within the organization and externally. The ideal candidate will act as a strategic partner to physician leaders while bringing discipline and structure to operations across the platform.
Role Overview
The Director of Operations will act as the operational core of Avenue Dermatology. This is a high-ownership leadership role focused on building scalable infrastructure across all locations, guiding the practice management team, and ensuring an excellent experience for patients and providers alike. The role reports to the CEO and joins the leadership group alongside physician partners and the CFO, contributing to growth planning, execution, and the long-term design of the organization.
This position is intended for a builder, not someone seeking to oversee a stable, fully-formed operation. It calls for a person who enjoys creating systems, leading teams, solving problems directly, and shaping the future of a growing business. The role is fully on-site, with regular presence across the Upper East Side locations required without exception.
What Success Looks Like in the First 12 Months
- Establish operational systems that can support both current sites and future expansion.
- Improve patient flow and make provider schedules more efficient across both practices.
- Lower aging accounts receivable and deliver measurable gains in collection performance.
- Create consistent workflows, reporting rhythms, and standard operating procedures across all locations.
- Become a trusted operational partner for both clinical and non-clinical staff.
- Help lead at least one acquisition integration or expansion project from start to finish.
Responsibilities
Multi-Site Practice Operations
- Keep daily operations running smoothly across all locations and serve as the main contact for operational concerns.
- Bring consistency to protocols, workflows, and patient journeys so care quality and provider experience remain uniform across sites.
- Visit sites regularly to verify operational performance and alignment with platform priorities.
- Create and oversee a daily safety meeting across locations to identify risks quickly, redeploy resources, and escalate issues in a structured way to senior leaders.
People Management and Workforce Development
- Lead and coach Practice Managers across locations while building a collaborative, high-performance team culture.
- Promote early reporting of safety concerns across clinical and administrative teams so issues are addressed before they escalate.
- Forecast staffing requirements and address gaps proactively, partnering with the CEO on hiring for both clinical and non-clinical positions.
- Coordinate with the PEO partner, Vensure, on HR compliance, onboarding, benefits administration, and payroll workflows.
Systems and Workflow Optimization
- Own the practice management and EHR setup, including Nextech and EZDerm, ensuring adoption, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement.
- Partner with the CFO to maintain a KPI dashboard covering visits, provider output, accounts receivable, payor mix, and patient satisfaction.
- Spot inefficiencies in day-to-day workflows and develop scalable fixes, while documenting and maintaining standard operating procedures.
- Manage vendors supporting IT, supplies, medical inventory, equipment, and facilities.
Revenue Cycle and Financial Performance
- Oversee revenue cycle results across both insurance-based and self-pay/cash-pay service lines.
- Manage discretionary operating budgets and work with the CFO and practice leadership to prepare, reconcile, and track location-level budgets.
- Collaborate with billing teams and outside vendors to improve collections, reduce aging receivables, and raise clean claim rates.
- Ensure financial processes comply with MSO policies and lender reporting obligations.
Cross-Functional Collaboration and Platform Strategy
- Contribute as a senior operational voice in leadership discussions around priorities, resource allocation, and the sequencing of growth initiatives.
- Convert operational challenges into clear, actionable recommendations for leadership.
- Support due diligence and end-to-end operational integration for new acquisitions.
- Work with the CEO on growth initiatives such as space expansion, new service offerings, and physician recruitment.
Core Competencies
Leadership and Judgment
- Demonstrated ability to build and sustain strong clinical operations across multiple locations.
- Sound judgment when deciding what to escalate, while remaining aligned with senior leaders.
- Comfort balancing platform-wide standardization with the realities of individual sites.
Communication and Influence
- Direct, clear communication style with both clinical and administrative stakeholders.
- Ability to handle difficult conversations professionally and calmly.
- Strong relationship-building skills that earn trust quickly with physicians, employees, and outside partners.
Adaptability and Accountability
- Comfort managing several priorities across multiple sites in a fast-moving, resource-conscious setting.
- Strong ownership of outcomes and reliable on-site presence.
- Comfort with ambiguity, along with curiosity, initiative, and self-direction.
Qualifications
Required
- 5 to 7+ years of progressive healthcare operations experience, including at least 3 years in management.
- Experience overseeing operations across more than one site at the same time.
- Background in both insurance-based fee-for-service and self-pay/cash-pay environments.
- Solid financial understanding, including P&Ls, revenue cycle metrics, and budget management.
- Working knowledge of practice management systems such as Nextech, EZDerm, or similar platforms.
- Strong Microsoft Office and Excel skills.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred
- Experience in specialty outpatient settings is strongly preferred.
- Prior work in an early-stage, private equity-backed, or MSO-structured organization is a plus.
- Master’s degree such as an MHA, MBA, or a related field is preferred.
- Familiarity with HIPAA, Joint Commission or similar standards, and New York-specific healthcare compliance requirements is preferred.
Work Style and Personality Traits
- Strongly accountable and focused on results.
- Resilient, and energized by difficult work that drives growth in self and others.
- Values autonomy but enjoys collaboration.
- Interested in building teams, processes, and companies.
- Balanced in outlook: optimistic while staying grounded in reality.
- Enjoys creating processes and protocols.
- Organized, structured, and methodical in both thinking and execution.
Location and Work Arrangement
This is an in-person position based in New York, NY. Regular presence across Avenue Dermatology’s Upper East Side locations is required.
