Director of Learning and Instructional Design

About the Role

trubel&co is seeking an experienced Director of Learning and Instructional Design to lead and expand its educational programs amid significant organizational growth. This pivotal full-time position will spearhead the learning and programs department, overseeing curricular development, instructional coaching, and impact evaluation aligned with principles of equity and justice.

This newly created role manages a team including an Associate Director of Programs, contracted instructional designers, fellows, interns, and facilitation staff. The Director acts as a primary facilitator for school-focused initiatives, merging strategy with hands-on engagement in classrooms and workshops. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, responsibilities extend beyond instructional leadership to support partnership growth and organizational strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and implement curricula and learning experiences for external partners including workshops and professional development modules.
• Manage open access curricula ensuring compliance with OER licensing and accessibility standards.
• Provide instructional guidance for CivicScape’s AI-driven curriculum planning tool tailored for various classroom subjects.
• Align educational content with standards such as NGSS, C3, and ISTE to seamlessly integrate into school frameworks.
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive internal library of professional development resources for educators.
• Conduct qualitative customer research through interviews and surveys, translating insights to refine educational offerings.
• Lead and facilitate trubel&co’s teacher community of practice, fostering educator confidence in data civics and mapping tools.
• Organize and lead professional development workshops and manage cohort-building among educators.
• Travel as needed to deliver in-person workshops and attend relevant conferences.
• Collaborate with Growth team for lead qualification, proposal development, and conference submissions related to teacher engagement.
• Manage the learning and programs department, guiding staff onboarding, coaching cycles, and ongoing professional development.
• Observe and provide actionable feedback to facilitators to enhance instructional effectiveness while supporting confidence.
• Partner with executive leadership to develop departmental strategy and program pilots embracing critical civic inquiry and liberatory pedagogy frameworks.
• Oversee youth and community curriculum design including data civics and GIS-integrated lessons, assessments, and self-paced modules.
• Link curriculum initiatives with impact measurement metrics and provide staff support via office hours.

Candidate Profile

• Proven leadership in instructional design at an organizational level with ability to create reproducible high-quality teaching systems.
• Expert facilitation skills to effectively engage diverse learners including teachers, youth, and mixed groups.
• Strong content expertise in data civics, GIS, STEM, civics, social studies, or environmental justice with emphasis on making data accessible.
• Experience coaching educators or instructional staff, emphasizing growth and capacity building over compliance.
• Strategic thinker possessing operational savvy to lead teams and manage ambiguity while driving long-term vision.
• Deep commitment to educational equity and liberatory pedagogy recognizing the value of community knowledge.

Additional Information

This is a full-time, remote role with a salary range of $90,000 to $95,000 annually. Some travel is required to support onsite facilitation and conferences. The position reports to the Executive Director and is structured to evolve as the organization grows. Candidates must be legally authorized to work full-time in the United States.

By six months, the Director will have established critical instructional infrastructure including professional development libraries and coaching systems. By one year, the role will focus on strategic direction, broadening curricula scope, and departmental growth.

Department oversight includes management of Associate Director of Programs, contracted instructional designers, fellows, and interns. The Associate Director manages Geospatial Justice facilitators day-to-day, while the Director offers instructional coaching.
