Job description
Overview
Kentwood Public Schools is seeking a Director of Facilities and Operations to lead and oversee district facility management, maintenance, custodial, grounds, safety, and capital construction projects. Serving over 9,600 students across more than 20 buildings totaling roughly 2 million square feet, the district is undertaking major facility investments exceeding $317 million from recent bond programs. This role reports to the Executive Director of Finance and Business Operations and requires a 52-week, 40-hour work schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership over maintenance, custodial, grounds, and capital projects for the entire district.
- Lead, mentor, evaluate, and develop facilities leadership staff and establish aligned operational goals.
- Conduct routine facility inspections and oversee timely resolution of maintenance and emergency issues.
- Manage custodial operations to maintain high cleanliness, safety, and operational standards.
- Coordinate long-range capital planning and manage bond-funded and improvement projects from design to closeout.
- Collaborate on budget development and control expenditures to ensure fiscal responsibility.
- Ensure district-wide compliance with all relevant safety, environmental, building, and fire regulations.
- Maintain effective communication and relationships with internal teams, contractors, and community stakeholders.
- Perform other tasks as directed by senior finance leadership and superintendent.
Candidate Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in Facilities Management, Engineering, Construction Management, Business Administration, or related field.
- Preferred 5+ years managing facilities or operations teams with experience in budget and system oversight.
- Experience with mechanical, electrical, HVACR systems, preventive maintenance, and capital project management.
- Familiarity with relevant certifications and compliance standards including OSHA, MIOSHA, ADA, and AHERA.
- Strong leadership, communication, partnership-building, and crisis response abilities.
- Ability to perform physical work including lifting up to 40 pounds, with accommodations for disabilities.
Benefits and Compensation
Starting salary range is $96,976 to $128,358 dependent on experience. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package including district-paid 403(b) contributions, longevity pay, paid vacation, personal and sick leave, as well as health insurance.
