Role overview
The Director of Distribution Management is a senior operations leader who owns the efficiency of the company’s distribution network. This role focuses on improving warehouse and delivery performance, keeping products moving smoothly from inventory to customers, and balancing service quality with cost control and dependable execution.
Core responsibilities
- Set the overall distribution direction across warehousing, order fulfillment, transportation, and delivery.
- Oversee inventory levels, stock transfers, dispatch planning, and shipment execution.
- Design and strengthen distribution procedures, operating standards, and systems used to track logistics data.
- Coordinate drivers, vehicles, loads, routing, and delivery schedules to support timely arrivals.
- Work closely with Supply Chain, Operations, Sales, Finance, and Customer Service to align distribution priorities with business goals.
- Handle negotiations with suppliers, carriers, and service partners to improve both cost efficiency and service quality.
- Track performance indicators such as inventory accuracy, delivery performance, warehouse output, and distribution spend.
- Lead distribution teams through hiring support, shift planning, coaching, and performance oversight.
- Resolve shipping problems, customer complaints, and day-to-day operational interruptions promptly.
- Continuously look for ways to improve distribution effectiveness and overall service standards.
Typical profile
This role is generally suited to professionals with 15 or more years of experience in distribution, logistics, supply chain, warehouse operations, or broader operations leadership. The ideal background includes strong exposure to warehouse management systems, transportation planning, inventory control, and process improvement. Candidates should be able to scale distribution operations while improving efficiency and reliability. Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and analytical abilities are important. Experience in multi-site distribution, retail, manufacturing, wholesale, or e-commerce environments is often preferred. A bachelor’s degree in supply chain, business, logistics, or a related area is commonly preferred.
