About The Role
Located in Skidegate or Masset, Haida Gwaii, the Council of the Haida Nation (CHN) invites applications for the position of Director of Communications. This senior leadership role, reporting to the Executive Director, is pivotal in shaping and managing communication strategies internally and externally that align with the CHN's values and priorities. The role extends beyond communications to include oversight over culture and language initiatives, research and film projects, media relations, tourism, wellbeing, and education.
Responsibilities
- Lead communication efforts explaining the implementation of the Haida Title Recognition Agreements and land jurisdiction transitions.
- Oversee communications programs related to cultural heritage, language, tourism, education, and community wellbeing.
- Facilitate effective communication and teamwork among CHN departments, committees, Haida citizens, and external collaborators.
- Manage and guide staff to successfully accomplish Haida Laas projects, work plans, and reporting duties.
- Track and report progress, risks, and milestones involving CHN and its people.
- Advise Council and senior leadership on communication strategies relating to feedback from Haida citizens, island residents, neighboring nations, and international audiences.
- Ensure communication approaches are community-centric and reflect Haida sovereignty and vision.
- Promote openness by making CHN policies, decisions, and procedures understandable and accessible.
- Create and implement engagement tools and techniques to meaningfully connect with citizens.
- Encourage a workplace culture based on respect, responsibility, and dedication to the Nation's goals.
Qualifications & Skills
- Comprehensive knowledge of Haida governance, laws, and cultural principles.
- Minimum five years of demonstrated expertise in communications or a related discipline.
- Strong project and financial management skills, with proven adherence to timelines, budgets, and compliance reporting.
- Substantial experience leading teams including hiring, mentoring, and maintaining a respectful work environment.
- Insight into Haida cultural values, challenges, and developmental opportunities.
- Proficiency with digital tools including Adobe, Canva, and Microsoft Office suite.
- Exceptional written and oral communication capabilities.
- Proven ability to strategize, innovate, adapt, and nurture team cohesion.
- At least five years in managing communications, culture, or Haida language programs with successful strategic implementation and project delivery.
- Valid British Columbia driver’s license required.
- Preference given to qualified Haida applicants in accordance with Section 41 of the British Columbia Human Rights Code.
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly wage between 57.91 and 64.98 based on experience.
- Full-time position with 35 to 40 hours per week, including paid time off and an additional two-week office closure during winter holidays.
