Job description
Position Overview
The Director of Athletics (AD) acts as the senior leader of the university's athletics division, entrusted with guiding all varsity and junior varsity sports programs. The AD is tasked with creating and executing strategic initiatives aligned with the university's mission to foster an environment where varsity sports thrive in adherence to core values.
Essential Responsibilities
- Provide dynamic leadership and mentorship to athletic staff including coaches, trainers, and student workers.
- Oversee all administrative decisions, operational procedures, and activities within the athletics department.
- Design and drive innovative strategic plans that enhance athletics programs and departmental goals.
- Partner with university leadership to spearhead and manage athletic fundraising efforts to support departmental financial needs and growth.
- Manage budgets associated with athletics programs, ensuring effective allocation and fiscal responsibility.
- Collaborate in recruiting athletes, overseeing scholarship allocation and maintaining roster targets for all sports teams.
- Guarantee that all student-athletes comply with NAIA eligibility standards and promote initiatives to improve athlete retention in collaboration with enrollment and student success offices.
- Support spiritual growth and leadership development of athletes in accordance with the university's Christian mission and core values.
- Administer facility operations, ensuring proper care and use of athletic equipment and venues.
- Fulfill additional duties assigned by university executives based on the candidate's expertise and experience.
Supervisory Scope
- Reports directly to Executive Vice President for Administration, Advancement, and Business Development.
- Leads all athletic coaches, trainers, and support personnel within the department.
Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree is a mandatory educational qualification.
- A minimum of ten years' experience in athletics coaching, program management, operations, or administration.
- Preferred experience includes familiarity with NAIA regulations and Christian higher education environments.
Required Knowledge and Capabilities
- Comprehensive understanding of collegiate athletics administration and operational practices.
- Strong dedication to the principles of Christian higher education.
- Exceptional leadership, organizational, and public relations skills.
- Effective communication abilities across diverse university stakeholders.
- Proven capacity to handle strategic planning along with complex budget oversight.
- Collaborative mindset and skill in fostering team-oriented work culture.
- Meticulous attention to detail with the capability to manage multiple tasks accurately and promptly.
- Commitment to confidentiality and professional ethics.
Physical and Technical Requirements
- Endurance for prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and typing activities.
- Ability to lift weights up to 35 pounds.
- Capability to operate university vehicles and utilize standard office and technological equipment.
