Job description

About GoFundMe

GoFundMe is a mission-driven platform built to help people support one another. It connects individuals and nonprofits in one place, making it simple and secure to raise funds for personal needs and important causes. Since 2010, the community has collectively raised more than $40 billion. In 2025, the company introduced GoFundMe Pro to provide nonprofits with more advanced fundraising capabilities and support. Together, these products reflect a goal of becoming the most helpful place in the world.

Role Overview

GoFundMe is looking for a Director of Financial Crime Operations to own and grow its first-line financial crime function, covering Transaction Monitoring and EDD & Investigations. The position focuses on creating and scaling the operating structure that helps identify, examine, and escalate higher-risk activity across the platform.

This senior leadership role sits within Trust & Safety and Risk. It requires managing operational teams, improving investigative quality, working with Product and Data on risk controls, and partnering closely with Compliance to keep the program effective, scalable, and aligned with regulatory duties.

Key Responsibilities

Financial Crime Leadership

  • Own the first-line financial crime operation, including Transaction Monitoring and EDD & Investigations.
  • Design a scalable framework for detection, investigation, escalation, and decision support.
  • Set up team roles, workflows, service levels, quality benchmarks, and escalation routes.
  • Work in close coordination with Compliance, Legal, Product, Data, Engineering, Payments, and Trust & Safety leaders.

Transaction Monitoring

  • Manage the team that reviews AML alerts, transaction behavior, and signs of suspicious activity.
  • Collaborate with Product, Data, and Compliance on rule and scenario design, tuning, coverage, and effectiveness.
  • Make sure monitoring outputs are properly documented, risk-based, and escalated when needed.
  • Spot new fraud and abuse patterns relevant to crowdfunding, payments, money movement, and platform misuse.

EDD & Investigations

  • Lead the team handling enhanced due diligence reviews for higher-risk customers, activity, and escalations.
  • Maintain strong investigative standards, including source of funds, source of wealth, use-of-funds, customer risk analysis, and case records.
  • Provide clear recommendations on risk outcomes, account limitations, offboarding, or escalation.
  • Partner with Compliance on SAR-related matters so first-line investigative work supports second-line decision-making and filing controls.

Product, Systems & Vendor Partnership

  • Work with Product and Engineering to build financial crime controls into the platform and payments flow.
  • Help shape data requirements, tool needs, case management upgrades, and automation opportunities.
  • Contribute to vendor and tooling decisions, including monitoring platforms, identity and KYC tools, device intelligence, adverse media, and other risk signals.
  • Use operational findings to improve detection accuracy and cut down unnecessary manual reviews.

Program Quality & Operational Maturity

  • Define quality standards for reviews, investigations, and escalations.
  • Track team performance, backlog status, alert quality, typology coverage, and operational risk through metrics.
  • Prepare leadership reporting on financial crime trends, operational health, emerging threats, and control effectiveness.
  • Maintain a strong working relationship with second-line Compliance while preserving clear first-line responsibility for execution.

Team Leadership

  • Lead, coach, and develop managers and analysts across Transaction Monitoring and EDD & Investigations.
  • Build clarity, accountability, and sound judgment in a high-stakes operating environment.
  • Recruit, grow, and retain talent as the function expands.
  • Foster a culture centered on curiosity, precision, urgency, and practical risk judgment.

Requirements

  • At least 8 years of experience leading work in financial crime, AML operations, transaction monitoring, EDD, investigations, fraud or risk operations, or a related area.
  • Background leading teams in fintech, payments, banking, marketplaces, money movement, or another regulated financial services setting.
  • Solid knowledge of AML, financial crime typologies, transaction monitoring, customer risk, EDD, and suspicious activity escalation.
  • Direct experience managing transaction monitoring and/or investigations teams.
  • Strong operational leadership capabilities, including workflow design, quality control, metrics, staffing, and escalation handling.
  • Ability to work effectively with Compliance while understanding the distinction between first-line execution and second-line oversight.
  • Experience partnering with Product, Data, Engineering, and vendor/tooling teams to improve risk controls and operational performance.
  • Strong analytical judgment and the ability to turn complex risk patterns into clear action steps.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including executive-level reporting and clear investigative standards.
  • Comfort working through ambiguity and bringing structure to a fast-moving environment.
  • Experience with case management systems, transaction monitoring tools, KYC/KYB vendors, device intelligence tools, adverse media tools, or similar risk platforms is preferred.
  • CAMS, CFE, or an equivalent credential is strongly preferred, though not mandatory if supported by extensive experience.
  • Alignment with GoFundMe’s values: impatient to be great, find a way, earn trust every day, and fueled by purpose.

Compensation & Benefits

The annual U.S. base salary range for this full-time role is $209,500 to $314,500. Compensation may also be adjusted upward based on location through geolocation differentials. Total pay can vary depending on skills, experience, education, and training.

GoFundMe also offers equity and additional benefits, including healthcare, dental, vision, life insurance, and a 401(k) savings plan.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • Contribute to a mission that supports millions of people each year.
  • Work in a fast-moving, innovative environment with a talented and committed team.
  • Join a collaborative group that values effort, celebration, and shared success.
  • Receive competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • Access support for hybrid work, family planning, parental leave, flexible time off, and mental health and wellness resources.
  • Participate in learning, development, and recognition programs.
  • Be part of active diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and employee resource groups.
  • Engage in volunteer opportunities that strengthen community impact.
