Job description
Position Overview
The Director of Arts and Culture reports to the City Chief Operations Officer and leads a broad portfolio of programs and services within the Cultural Services Department. The role oversees major city cultural assets and initiatives, including the Albuquerque Biological Park (Zoo, Aquarium, Botanic Gardens, and Tingley Beach), the Albuquerque Museum, Explora Science Center, the Anderson/Abruzzo Balloon Museum, the Public Library of Albuquerque and Bernalillo County, community event venues such as KIMO Theater and the South Broadway Cultural Center, public outdoor cultural events, Old Town activities, The Yards rental management, the Public Art Enhancement Program, the 1% for Art Program, the Urban Enhancement Trust Fund program, and strategic support functions such as GOV-TV and department marketing.
Role Nature
This is an unclassified, at-will position.
Primary Accountabilities
- Oversee departmental operations, finances, and personnel.
- Track and evaluate the performance of the Cultural Services Department.
- Continuously look for ways to strengthen efficiency and improve how services are delivered.
- Partner with City Administration and the public to promote Albuquerque's history and culture while supporting programs, entertainment, collections, and facilities that advance literacy, learning, economic activity, and tourism.
Additional Requirements
- A valid New Mexico driver's license is required, or the applicant must be able to obtain one by the start date.
- A City Operator's Permit (COP) must be obtained within 6 months of hire.
