Job description

Position Summary

This role is responsible for overseeing, organizing, and directing the daily operations and programs of an assigned community recreation center. The position also works with other divisions, partner agencies, and the public while providing advanced support to senior supervisors or management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the staffing, coordination, and day-to-day operations of an assigned recreation or shelter center, including recreation programming, facility upkeep, and promotion of center offerings.
  • Help shape goals, objectives, policies, and priorities, and then carry out the related procedures.
  • Look for ways to improve service delivery, assess resource requirements, review ideas with management, and implement approved changes.
  • Lead, organize, and monitor the work assigned to recreation center staff; distribute tasks, track progress, evaluate methods and results, and resolve operational issues with employees.
  • Hire, train, encourage, and assess staff performance; arrange training as needed and address performance gaps.
  • Support budget planning and administration by estimating staffing, equipment, material, and supply needs; monitor spending and approve expenses within authority.
  • Inspect buildings and equipment to confirm they are safe and properly maintained, and submit maintenance or repair requests when needed.
  • Oversee fee collection for recreation programs and make sure funds are deposited correctly and financial records are maintained.
  • Build positive relationships with community groups and agencies, and explain the center’s programs and services to individuals and groups.
  • Create event schedules for the recreation center, using available dates and resources to plan activities.
  • Answer public questions and service requests, including explaining costs, rules, procedures, and available programs.
  • Serve on committees, prepare reports, and draft correspondence as needed.
  • Coordinate center activities with other city divisions and outside organizations.
  • Stay current on new developments and trends in community recreation by attending professional meetings and events.
  • Carry out other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in business administration, social work, recreation services, education, or general studies.
  • Three years of related experience in program operations, recreation program coordination, youth programs, or educational program work.
  • At least one year of lead or supervisory experience.
  • A valid New Mexico driver’s license, or the ability to obtain one by the start date.
  • A City Operator’s Permit (COP) within 6 months of hire.
  • A valid First Aid certificate within 6 months of hire.
  • A valid CPR certificate within 6 months of hire.
  • Availability to work weekends, holidays, and flexible schedules, including evenings, when required.
  • This position is safety sensitive and may be subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Work may involve community center and field environments, travel between sites, exposure to noise, and physical activity such as prolonged walking, standing, sitting, moderate to heavy lifting, and operating motorized vehicles.

Additional Information

Education and experience that directly relate to the minimum requirements may be considered interchangeable on a year-for-year basis.
