Job description

Assignment overview

This is a short-term online volunteering task based in Colombia and carried out remotely. It focuses on reviewing and labeling digital content related to hate speech, toxic communication, and gender-based violence in the context of Colombia’s 2026 legislative and presidential elections.

The assignment lasts 7 weeks and involves 14 individual assignment slots. The expected weekly commitment is 16 to 20 hours. Before starting, selected volunteers will receive training on the platform and the annotation guidelines.

Host entity and context

The assignment is led by PNUD Colombia - Gobernabilidad Democrática, as part of a broader democratic governance effort to strengthen civic engagement, access to quality public-interest information, and informed debate. The work uses eMonitor+, a global digital ecosystem monitoring tool developed by UNDP.

In electoral periods, digital spaces often become central arenas for public discussion, but they can also amplify hate speech, harmful messaging, and gender-based violence. This task supports evidence generation for prevention, early warning, institutional advocacy, and protection of human rights and political participation, especially for women and historically excluded groups.

What the assignment involves

Volunteers will review digital posts that have already been collected by the monitoring system and classify them according to the project’s methodology and categories. The work consists of identifying and annotating instances of hate speech, toxic communication, and gender-based violence across digital media and social networks.

If several online volunteers are selected, the work will be divided into balanced batches of posts so that results remain comparable across contributors. The expected deliverables are annotated databases prepared according to the project’s instruments and later used for analysis and institutional action.

Conditions and important notes

This is an online volunteering arrangement, not a contract. It is task-based, temporary, and remote. Online volunteers are not UN Volunteers in the formal sense and do not receive a salary, stipend, allowance, or other entitlements. A certificate of appreciation is issued after successful completion, and an evaluation is provided at the end of the collaboration.

Participation is voluntary and carried out for the public good rather than for financial reward. The United Nations does not charge any application, processing, interviewing, testing, or training fees. Applicants should be alert to possible scams and should handle personal information carefully when applying online.

The programme is committed to equal opportunity and welcomes qualified applicants regardless of gender, care-protected characteristics, race, sex, gender identity, religion, nationality, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, disability, pregnancy, age, language, social origin, or other status.

Additional guidance on online assignment criteria and general platform rules is available through the official UNV online volunteering resources.
