Job description
About the organization
Tessera Institute for Global Affairs, previously known as Tessera Research Collective, is an independent research organization focused on international affairs and security studies. The team brings together researchers, editors, and early-career professionals from a range of backgrounds to create policy-oriented analysis and foster an inclusive community that works across institutional boundaries.
Role overview
This volunteer leadership position supports the smooth operation of a growing institute. The Deputy Head of Operations will provide both strategic oversight and practical guidance to a team of about ten volunteers working in marketing, social media, strategic communications, and human resources. The role is intentionally self-directed, so the person in this position will be expected to shape operational priorities rather than follow a fixed task list. It is a good fit for someone who understands how research organizations function and can keep processes on track with limited supervision.
The role is remote and requires roughly 15–20 hours per month.
Reporting structure
The Deputy Head of Operations reports to the Head of Operations and collaborates closely with the Executive Director on strategy and execution.
Key responsibilities
- Keep the institute’s operational teams running smoothly on a day-to-day basis.
- Guide, support, and coordinate a volunteer group of around ten people across marketing, social media, strategic communications, and HR.
- Partner with the Head of Operations to turn strategic goals into clear procedures and expectations.
- Ensure strong coordination between operational functions and the research and editorial teams.
- Spot operational issues early and strengthen systems, workflows, and team culture.
- Assist with recruiting, onboarding, and retaining volunteers.
Candidate profile
This opportunity is suited to a mid-career professional with about five or more years of experience in operations or management, ideally within a think tank, research institute, university, or a similar setting. Experience leading or coordinating teams is important, and distributed or volunteer team leadership is especially valuable. Strong organization, sound judgment, and people-management skills are essential. A clear interest in, or alignment with, the organization’s mission in global affairs and security is also expected.
Benefits and what you gain
- Senior-level leadership experience managing a multidisciplinary, cross-cultural team in an international research environment.
- Substantial freedom to define and own an operational area.
- Access to a meaningful network of researchers, editors, and practitioners in international affairs and security.
- Flexible, fully remote participation with a modest and predictable time commitment.
Additional information
This is a volunteer role rather than a paid position. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Reasonable accommodations can be provided for candidates who need them. Applicants who do not meet every criterion but believe they are a strong match are encouraged to apply.
