Job description
Position Summary
Under general guidance, this role supports the oversight of all media relations, communications, and public information efforts relating to the Mayor’s Office and City departments. Responsibilities include assisting with the formulation and execution of strategic communication plans that advance the Mayor’s goals while ensuring consistent, timely, and accurate messaging throughout the organization. This position directs daily communication operations, responds to media inquiries, manages digital communications, and facilitates public engagement, serving as a key consultant to senior leadership on communication strategy and crisis management.
The Deputy Director assists the Communications Director by supervising public information officers and communications staff, coordinating communication plans, handling media outreach, managing executive communication, and overseeing special projects to maintain consistent branding and messaging. The position may assume the responsibilities of the Director of Communications in their absence. This is an unclassified at-will position.
Key Responsibilities
- Support management of internal and external media and public messaging for the Mayor’s Office and city departments.
- Coordinate strategic communication initiatives including media relations, digital content, and public involvement efforts.
- Oversee project timelines and deliverables ensuring quality and timely completion of communication projects.
- Create, review, and refine press releases, talking points, speeches, social media posts, public statements, and other communication materials.
- Organize and support major events, press briefings, and executive public appearances.
- Monitor media coverage and assist with media inquiries, emerging issues, and crisis communication responses.
- Facilitate coordination between departments, leadership, public information officers, and external partners.
- Participate in communication strategy meetings and help develop long-term messaging plans and schedules.
- Guide communication staff and public information officers to ensure message consistency and standards.
- Ensure all communication materials align with administration priorities and branding.
- Maintain relationships with media, reporters, community groups, and partner agencies.
- Analyze the effectiveness of communication efforts and suggest improvements.
- Prepare reports and updates on communication activities and projects.
- Serve as acting Director of Communications when assigned.
Additional Duties
- Perform other relevant duties as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in communications, journalism, political science, public administration, public relations, marketing, or a related area is preferred.
- A minimum of six years progressive experience in communications, media relations, public information, public affairs, or journalism is preferred.
- Two or more years of supervisory or leadership experience is preferred.
- Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver’s License or ability to obtain by hire date.
- Ability to acquire a City Operator’s Permit within six months of employment.
Work Environment
Work is primarily performed in an office setting involving regular interaction with computers, media representatives, elected officials, staff, and the general public. Physical demands include sitting or standing for extended periods, occasional light lifting, and attendance at meetings or events beyond normal work hours.
