Role overview

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is looking for a senior finance leader to take on the position of Deputy Chief Financial Officer. In this influential post, you will work alongside the Chief Financial Officer to steer the Finance Directorate and help set the direction of the Trust’s financial future.

The role sits at the centre of financial leadership across one of the region’s largest NHS providers. You will contribute to a high-performing finance function and support the Trust’s ambition to deliver Exceptional Care Together.

What you will do

You will oversee the day-to-day running of major finance activities and help shape financial strategy across the organisation. The remit includes financial planning, income and contracting, performance oversight, transformation, CIP delivery, procurement, costing, financial intelligence, and statutory reporting.

You will also lead the development of annual budgets, medium-term financial plans, forecasts, recovery measures, and business cases. A further part of the role is to ensure strong governance, audit readiness, assurance, and compliance with statutory financial duties.

Working with clinical, operational, and system partners, you will help improve financial grip, support sound decision-making, and make sure resources are used effectively for patients. You will lead and develop senior finance teams, build productive relationships across the Trust and the wider NHS system, represent the organisation externally, and step in for the CFO when needed.

What the Trust is looking for

The Trust is seeking a fully qualified CCAB accountant with substantial senior-level finance leadership experience in a large and complex organisation, preferably within the NHS or the wider public sector. You should bring strong technical knowledge, commercial judgement, and the ability to influence effectively across clinical, operational, and system-level relationships.

The ideal candidate will be a visible, trusted, and inclusive leader who can help strengthen financial control and support high-quality decision-making in the best interests of patients.
