Role Overview

This contract position seeks a seasoned Defense Analyst specializing in military operations and international humanitarian law (IHL). Working remotely within the United States, the role involves applying expertise in military science, security studies, and conflict law to support defense-related AI model evaluation and policy development.

Responsibilities

  • Develop detailed classification systems (taxonomies) tailored to military and defense operations in various conflict scenarios.
  • Create frameworks to differentiate and triage dual-use technologies applicable for both military and civilian purposes.
  • Define explicit parameters delineating prohibited forms of assistance in compliance with international humanitarian law.
  • Construct risk assessment rubrics and scenario-based tools to evaluate conflict situations concerning defense activities.
  • Assess and improve policy-oriented benchmarks for testing AI models within defense and humanitarian sectors.
  • Deliver comprehensive written and oral analyses to clarify intricate concepts related to warfighting, operational targeting, and IHL principles.

Candidate Requirements

  • Substantial experience (around 8 years for senior contributors) in military, defense analysis, or international humanitarian law.
  • Possession of an advanced degree or equivalent practical experience in military science, security studies, international law, or closely related disciplines.
  • Proven reputation and recognized expertise in warfighting, operational planning, legal targeting frameworks, or humanitarian law implementation.
  • Strong proficiency interpreting and applying ethical conflict guidelines, IHL norms, and defense policies in practical environments.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, capable of conveying complex technical and ethical topics succinctly.
  • Background in research, policy analysis, or advisory positions within military, government, legal, or think tank organizations.

Additional Information

  • Contract nature with flexible weekly commitment ranging from 10 to 40 hours.
  • Compensation ranges from $50 to $90 per hour.
  • Fully remote position based in the United States.
