Job description

Role Overview

This contract role supports a major North American financial institution with broad operations across institutional and corporate banking, wealth management, private client services, commercial banking, treasury, and retail banking. The assignment is for a Data Analyst & Data Modeler focused on product and insurance risk, working from Toronto in a hybrid arrangement.

Assignment Details

Duration: 7 months, with the possibility of extension.

Pay: Starting at $50 per hour.

Work Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Work Mode: Hybrid.

Business Hours: Monday to Friday during core business hours.

What You Will Do

You will examine and document business workflows related to insurance product design, underwriting evaluation, risk scoring, reinsurance allocation, and claims handling. The role requires close collaboration with actuarial, underwriting, risk, and claims teams to gather and clarify requirements.

You will convert complex insurance risk logic into clear business requirements and analyze data tied to insurance products, underwriting scores, reinsurance structures, and claims lifecycle events. The position also involves creating conceptual, logical, and physical data models that support insurance risk analytics and reporting.

You will help develop and improve product and insurance risk frameworks that meet regulatory expectations and internal governance standards. In addition, you will map reinsurance treaties, ceded and assumed reinsurance rules, and integration points across policy administration, underwriting, and claims platforms.

You will document reinsurance processes, bordereaux reporting needs, and quality assurance checkpoints. The role also includes creating source-to-target mappings for underwriting, reinsurance, and claims data across systems such as PAS, CRM, rating engines, and claims platforms.

You will support data quality validation, lineage documentation, and the definition of key risk metrics such as underwriting leakage, claims ratios, reinsurance exposure, and over-retention. SQL-based analysis will be part of your work to support underwriting rules, reserving calculations, exposure reporting, and claims trend analysis.

Within Agile delivery teams, you will help design workflows, integrations, and platform improvements for underwriting, reinsurance, or claims initiatives. You will take part in sprint planning, backlog refinement, product grooming, and technical feasibility discussions with architects and developers.

You will act as a key bridge between business teams and IT delivery groups, coordinate with external vendors, and facilitate workshops, requirement reviews, and UAT cycles to ensure outputs are complete and aligned.

The role also includes designing and building enterprise Power BI solutions, including semantic models, dimensional and star schemas, advanced DAX measures, calculation groups, Premium capacity management, workspace architecture, capacity optimization, deployment pipelines across Dev/Test/Prod, and row-level and object-level security.

You will also contribute to Fabric-based analytics solutions, including lakehouse and warehouse modelling, Delta tables, medallion architecture with Bronze/Silver/Gold layers, semantic model integration with Power BI, and dataset optimization for near real-time, large-scale insurance risk analytics.

Experience and Qualification Requirements

A bachelor’s degree in information technology, Business Administration, or Insurance is required. The role calls for 5 years of data analyst experience, strong Power BI development expertise, and current knowledge of the latest Power BI features and enhancements.

You should have advanced SQL and DAX skills for data transformation, querying, and complex calculations, along with solid data modelling capability for building efficient and scalable semantic models. Strong analytical ability is required to turn complex data into useful insights.

Experience with governance, security, performance tuning, and control implementation in Power BI is needed. Insurance industry experience is considered an advantage.
