Overview
This role involves maintaining a safe, clean, and visually appealing environment across school district facilities for students, staff, and visitors. The Custodian performs routine cleaning and maintenance tasks to preserve facility functionality and appearance.
Key Responsibilities
- Follow instructions from the Head Custodian, Supervisor, or assigned Administrator.
- Perform custodial and preventive maintenance duties throughout all district locations.
- Clean furniture, woodwork, walls, and windows with approved equipment and cleaning solutions.
- Maintain flooring by mopping, scrubbing, stripping, waxing, shampooing, vacuuming, and spot cleaning using manual and powered equipment.
- Use ladders or scaffolding to clean multilevel staircases and elevated areas safely.
- Carry out physical tasks that include walking on various surfaces, standing, and bending for extended periods.
- Keep cleaning equipment and supplies organized, maintain inventory levels, and reorder as necessary.
- Use only approved chemicals and cleaning agents with protective equipment to ensure safe maintenance practices.
- Arrange and move furniture and equipment to prepare for meetings, events, and cleaning.
- Operate small tools and machinery carefully as part of cleaning tasks.
- Address safety and operational issues promptly to support an effective educational environment.
- Adhere to work attendance and punctuality requirements.
- Participate in training opportunities to develop job skills and apply learning on the job.
- Maintain security over keys, alarm codes, equipment, and supplies.
- Handle confidential information responsibly and respect organizational hierarchy.
- Conduct oneself professionally with students, coworkers, administration, and the public.
- Stay informed on job-related developments, literature, and technical information.
- Follow all safety protocols and comply with federal, state laws, and board policies.
- Accept additional duties as assigned by supervisors.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Basic skills and experience in cleaning, floor care, restroom maintenance, and equipment upkeep preferred.
- Willingness to learn and improve skills through off-duty study or trade courses.
- Physical ability to climb ladders and scaffolding safely and lift/carry up to 35 pounds for distances exceeding 20 feet.
- Comfortable working in less desirable locations and conditions.
- Capable of understanding and executing both written and oral instructions efficiently.
- Ability to work collaboratively with others.
- Maintain any required licenses, certificates, or credentials relevant to the position.
Additional Information
- Employment follows a salaried, non-exempt pay schedule under the custodial salary plan.
- Position is part of the School Leadership and Operations division and reports to the school principal or designee.
- Contract duration is 218 working days per year.
- Employee contributions for FICA taxes are matched by the school district. Temporary workers are not eligible for benefits.
