Job description
Role overview
The Custodian at Coomes Recreation Center is tasked with keeping the facility and the nearby grounds clean, orderly, and ready for daily use and events. This is a rotating role that requires working evenings and weekends. The position also calls for independent judgment and the ability to carry out daily work without direct supervision.
Key duties
- Carry out routine custodial work such as sweeping, mopping, waxing floors and stairwells, vacuuming carpets, cleaning windows, and replacing light bulbs.
- Dust and polish furniture, ledges, banisters, ceilings, bleachers, and light fixtures.
- Keep restrooms, drinking fountains, and kitchen areas clean and sanitary.
- Collect litter and waste from inside the building as well as the surrounding grounds.
- Prepare rooms and spaces for meetings and other activities, then restore them afterward.
- Move equipment, tables, chairs, and similar items weighing up to 50 pounds, and work on stairs when required.
- Complete minor repairs to the facility and equipment.
- Use safety practices and help maintain a safe environment inside and outside the building.
- Refill soap and paper dispensers and handle other cleaning-related tasks as assigned.
- Confirm assigned work has been completed and share any facility, supply, or staffing concerns with a supervisor.
- Keep cleaning supplies stocked in the appropriate areas.
- Assist with maintenance records.
- Check that all doors are secured and activate the alarm system.
Requirements
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- At least 2 years of experience in work related to custodial duties is needed.
- Working knowledge of custodial procedures and the ability to complete assigned tasks is expected.
- Ability to operate janitorial equipment such as buffers and carpet cleaners is required.
- Ability to use hand tools and power tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and pliers is required.
