Custodian at Bear Creek High School

Overview

The Lodi Unified School District is seeking a Custodian to carry out various cleaning duties and basic maintenance at Bear Creek High School. This role involves ensuring that school facilities and grounds are kept safe, clean, and orderly.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform cleaning tasks including sweeping, sanitizing, scrubbing, dusting, and cleaning offices, hallways, classrooms, restrooms, cafeterias, auditoriums, libraries, multi-purpose rooms, and stairways.
• Strip, mop, wax, and maintain floors in good condition.
• Vacuum rugs, empty and clean trash containers, and restock paper and soap dispensers.
• Dust and clean walls, furniture, woodwork, and equipment regularly.
• Wash windows, walls, woodwork, perform touch-up painting, and remove graffiti as assigned.
• Clean blackboards, desks, cabinets, shelves, and window sills.
• Maintain school grounds by sweeping sidewalks, picking up debris, watering flower beds, and managing sprinklers.
• Set up and move furniture and equipment for events and track changes.
• Check, replace, and distribute supplies and equipment as needed.
• Secure buildings by locking/unlocking doors, gates, windows; turn lights and alarms on/off; raise and lower flags.
• Operate and maintain floor maintenance machines and other custodial equipment.
• Inspect school areas to discourage vandalism and theft, reporting any damage appropriately.
• Change light bulbs and perform minor repairs on fixtures and custodial equipment.
• Report broken locks or windows for repair.
• Perform laundry duties such as washing, drying, and folding linen.

Knowledge and Skills

• Familiarity with modern cleaning techniques and preservation of floors, carpets, furniture, walls, and fixtures.
• Understanding requirements to maintain a safe and clean school environment.
• Knowledge of cleaning tools, equipment, chemicals, and safety regulations.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions accurately.
• Capability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting and moving equipment.
• Competence in reading cleaning and chemical labels carefully.
• Strong interpersonal skills for effective collaboration with colleagues.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess a high school diploma or its equivalent. Prior responsible experience in custodial and general maintenance work is highly preferred.

Work Environment

• This position requires working both indoors and outdoors.
• Incumbents may be called upon to respond to emergency situations.

Physical Requirements and Hazards

• Frequent bending, kneeling, or crouching during work.
• Handling of custodial equipment requiring carrying, pushing, or pulling.
• Lifting of moderately heavy furniture and equipment.
• Exposure to cleaning chemicals, paint fumes, solvents, and working at heights.
