Role Overview
The Criminal Researcher will work remotely and support criminal background screening by searching county, state, and federal court systems for reportable records tied to employment screening cases. This role is suited to someone who enjoys focused independent work and values speed, accuracy, and integrity.
Key Responsibilities
- Examine court documents and docket entries with strong attention to detail.
- Perform deep online research using official government databases and related tools.
- Request and confirm legal records from researchers and court clerks.
- Read legal documents and apply client-specific as well as federal and state restrictions; FCRA knowledge is beneficial.
- Produce detailed investigative reports within tight deadlines.
- Keep internal systems updated in real time and escalate delays or inconsistencies.
- Communicate clearly with courts, clerks, and other public agencies.
- Recommend process, workflow, and communication improvements.
- Protect the privacy and security of all sensitive information.
- Search public court records online and, when needed, on site across different jurisdictions.
- Identify, interpret, and record criminal case details accurately.
- Follow company research procedures and FCRA-compliant workflows.
- Meet daily productivity and quality expectations.
- Identify discrepancies, sealed records, and possible identity mismatches.
- Coordinate with team leads when questions or escalations arise.
- Document research activity and preserve chain-of-custody records in the case management system.
- Stay up to date on local jurisdiction access rules and legal changes.
Qualifications
- At least 2 years of experience in criminal records research is preferred.
- Good working knowledge of U.S. court systems and legal terminology is required.
- Ability to work independently and consistently meet strict deadlines.
- A reliable high-speed internet connection and secure home office setup are needed.
- FCRA knowledge is required.
- Experience in legal research, investigations, or data verification is an advantage.
Bonus Qualifications
- Experience with background screening companies or CRAs.
- Familiarity with TazWorks, ClearStar, or similar systems.
- Bilingual ability.
