Position Overview
The Crime Scene Specialist role involves identifying, documenting, collecting, and preserving physical evidence from crime scenes. This includes ensuring the integrity and proper custody of evidence, along with providing expert testimony in court about the chain of custody and evidence preservation.
This is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug and alcohol testing. The job description outlines the general duties and responsibilities, but may not encompass all tasks performed under this classification.
Qualification Details
Crime Scene Specialist II (Level 106)
- Associate's degree from an accredited institution in criminal justice, social science, forensic science, chemistry, biology, physical science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of three years of work experience in public safety, crime scene investigation, or evidence collection.
- Successful completion of the Crime Scene Specialist (CSS) Training and On-the-Job Training (OJT) program is mandatory.
- One year of probation is required.
- Successful passing of a physical agility assessment is necessary.
- Preferred but not mandatory: WorkKeys assessments in Applied Mathematics, Workplace Observation, and Business Writing.
- Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must pass drug screening, criminal record check, and background investigation.
- Possession of a valid New Mexico Driver's License at hire, and acquiring a City Operator's Permit within six months post-hire.
After completing one year as a Crime Scene Specialist II, promotion to Crime Scene Specialist III is possible.
Crime Scene Specialist III (Level 108)
- Associate's degree as described above.
- Four years of crime scene investigation or related evidence collection experience (experience in public safety not interchangeable).
- Successful completion of CSS Training and OJT program.
- Mandatory one-year probation and physical agility test.
- All other requirements similar to Level II, including age, license, permits, and background checks.
Additional Information
This position requires a one-year probationary period. All candidates must pass comprehensive background screening and drug testing. The role is safety sensitive and may involve random testing during employment.
