Position Overview
This opening is for a Court Bailiff II (Lautenberg) in Hilo, Hawaii, under Recruitment Number 26-100JC, SR-15. The salary rate is scheduled to take effect on 07/01/2026.
Role Summary
The court bailiff acts as a courtroom officer who supports the judge by maintaining order, delivering court notices, assisting jurors during deliberations, taking responsibility for grand and trial jurors, and handling other related duties as assigned.
Responsibilities
- Provide courtroom assistance and services to the judge.
- Maintain proper order and decorum in the courtroom.
- Serve notices related to court proceedings and actions.
- Attend to jurors while they are deliberating.
- Oversee grand jurors and trial jurors.
- Carry out additional duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
A high school diploma is required. Relevant experience or related work requiring strong reading comprehension, the ability to follow written instructions, or advanced verbal communication may be accepted in place of education on a year-for-year basis.
Applicants need three years of general work experience showing the ability to understand and apply instructions, procedures, rules, and regulations; prepare simple written and typed reports; and interact effectively with people.
In addition, one year of progressively responsible experience as a bailiff in a statewide court system is required, with demonstrated knowledge of court operations.
Substitutions and Special Conditions
Successful study in a baccalaureate program at an accredited college or university may replace general experience on a year-for-year basis, with 15 semester credit hours counting as six months of experience, up to a maximum of three years.
This position requires a current, valid driver's license for operating a motor vehicle.
Because this role falls under Lautenberg requirements, applicants must be legally allowed to possess firearms or ammunition under state and federal law, including no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction.
