What the role involves

The court bailiff supports courtroom operations by announcing when proceedings begin and end, keeping order inside the courtroom, delivering court notices, summoning defendants and witnesses to appear before the judge, and handling other court-related tasks as needed.

Minimum qualifications

Applicants should have a high school diploma. In some cases, additional experience of the same kind and quality may replace education on a year-for-year basis if the applicant has the ability to read, understand, and follow written instructions or has strong verbal communication skills.

General experience must total three years and should show the ability to understand and follow a variety of instructions, procedures, rules, and regulations; prepare and type basic reports; and interact effectively with different people.

Substitutions and special requirements

Completed study in a baccalaureate program at an accredited college or university may be used instead of general experience on a year-for-year basis. Fifteen semester credit hours count as six months of experience, up to a maximum of three years.

A valid current driver’s license is required because the job involves operating a motor vehicle.

Because this is a Lautenberg-related position, applicants must be legally allowed to possess firearms or ammunition under state and federal law. This includes having no misdemeanor or felony domestic violence conviction.
