Role Context

We are offering an opportunity for an experienced Consultant in Transport Planning or Modelling to join our growing Transport Advisory, Planning, and Modelling team based in Dublin or Cork, benefiting from a hybrid work arrangement. The successful candidate will help provide expert technical advice to new and existing clients throughout Ireland. The role includes developing strategic highway, public transportation, and multimodal transport models. Collaboration with Modelling, Appraisal, Public Transport, and Transport Planning teams across the UK and Ireland will support project delivery and management.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist in delivering transport advisory, planning, and modelling projects within Ireland, enhancing technical expertise in either transport planning or modelling based on role specialization, and ensuring high-quality outputs for clients and stakeholders.
  • For modelling-focused roles: use the National Transport Authority Regional Transport Modelling System and TII NTpM tools, including setting up and executing modelling scenarios and analyzing results.
  • For planning-focused roles: develop evidence-based transport planning guidance for a variety of projects, incorporating modelling data as needed.
  • Perform technical tasks on small to medium projects or specific segments within larger assignments, delivering work on schedule, budget, and to expected standards, preparing accurate and clear documentation.
  • Contribute to diverse transport planning and appraisal tasks such as traffic impact assessments, transport assessments, active travel initiatives, sustainable transport studies, Appraisal-Based Transport Assessments (ABTAs), scheme appraisal, business case development, and environmental assessments, aligned with Irish policies and guidelines.
  • Support projects promoting sustainable mobility, carbon reduction, and integrated land use and transport planning, working collaboratively with colleagues in Planning, Modelling, Rail Consultancy, and Development Planning to produce comprehensive deliverables.

Candidate Profile and Skills

  • Proven relevant experience in Transport Advisory, Planning, or Modelling with demonstrated flexibility based on expertise and competence.
  • Strong qualitative and quantitative analytical skills with proficiency handling complex datasets and conducting accurate technical evaluations; relevant background in transport planning, modelling, or traffic analysis.
  • For modelling candidates: familiarity with software such as Cube, SATURN, Aimsun, Paramics, VISUM, VISSIM, or EMME is beneficial; experience with NTA RMS and/or TII NTpM is a plus. Understanding strategic transport model development is advantageous.
  • For planning candidates: experience in traffic impact and transport assessments, active travel and sustainable transport planning, appraisal, and development transport work; knowledge of modelling and its role in planning is advantageous.
  • Awareness of Irish transport and planning policy, including familiarity with key frameworks like the National Planning Framework, National Development Plan, DMURS, National Cycle Manual, TII guidance, NTA, and local authority policies appropriate to experience level.
  • Strong computing abilities including GIS, spreadsheets, databases, programming/coding, and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral, with the ability to contribute effectively to technical reports and multidisciplinary team efforts.
  • Collaborative, adaptable, and willing to support projects across sectors such as Transport Planning, Modelling, Rail Consultancy, and Development Planning as needed.
