Your role will involve engaging readers from diverse backgrounds and connecting them with journalists on a wide array of topics such as politics, foreign affairs, culture, and human achievement.

This position is a permanent role under a National Union of Journalists contract, based primarily in the London Kings Cross office with a hybrid working model requiring on-site presence for at least three days a week. Job sharing arrangements are welcome through a joint application.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and publish articles for Conversations under the guidance of the head of community engagement, facilitating questions and debates while mediating interactions between the audience and journalists.
  • Serve as an active online host, maintaining ongoing conversations on and off the platform, representing the organization with clear presence and authority.
  • Monitor reader comments across all sections, ensuring discussions adhere to established community standards and terms of service using appropriate moderation tools.
  • Spot emerging news stories or trends to inform editorial decisions.
  • Participate in editorial meetings to brainstorm and contribute ideas.
  • Support editorial projects and implement technological tools to stimulate engagement and debate.
  • Advise editorial teams on managing user interactions effectively and promote best practices in community management.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven experience moderating and engaging with online communities, with an informed understanding of social media platforms, audience behavior, and content dynamics.
  • Strong interest and knowledge in current affairs and broad news topics, capable of following and fostering international discussions.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of news coverage, especially related to theguardian.com and its associated channels.
  • Experience navigating the challenges at the intersection of editorial content and community engagement, including familiarity with UK libel, defamation laws, and journalistic ethics.
  • Ability to bring diverse perspectives to community interactions and maintain inclusive dialogues.

Workplace Culture and Benefits

The organization values diversity and inclusive practices reflective of its audience, offering six weeks of paid leave annually (plus holidays) and the option to buy additional leave. Pension contributions are generous with a tiered matching scheme based on age. Additional benefits include life insurance, income protection, enhanced family leave policies, support for IVF, menopause, baby loss, and transgender equality policies, as well as health and wellness programs such as free yoga and pilates classes, a corporate gym membership, and cycle to work scheme. Staff dining facilities overlook Regents Canal and serve meals throughout the day.
