Job description
Position Overview
This is a temporary, full-time onsite role based in Fresno, California. The assignment is scheduled to conclude on December 18, 2026. The counselor works under general direction from the assigned supervisor and supports students through community outreach, career advising, and counseling. The role includes coordinating career assessments, helping students with college applications, financial aid forms, scholarships, and job-readiness preparation.
The position supports the organization’s broader mission and vision by helping students prepare for college and career pathways.
Core Duties
The College and Career Counselor helps build student readiness for post-secondary education and employment by sharing information and support across college, career, and vocational pathways.
- Promote a college-going environment and coordinate career exploration activities and events.
- Partner with school staff on campus-wide initiatives and projects.
- Serve as a bridge between the school, internal teams, and community partners.
- Set up monthly meetings with the college-going collaborative team.
- Prepare and refresh each student’s high school profile every year.
- Deliver presentations for parents, students, and other audiences.
- Participate in meetings, conferences, and seminars focused on career trends, admissions, and financial aid.
- Review transcripts to confirm students remain on track for graduation.
- Administer and track senior surveys.
- Guide students as they develop and carry out post-secondary plans.
College Guidance Responsibilities
- Teach students and families about college admissions, related trends, procedures, and testing requirements.
- Meet with visiting college admissions representatives and connect them with students.
- Act as a primary contact for community colleges.
- Support college applications and enrollment steps, including dual/concurrent enrollment and exam registration.
Career Guidance Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and publicize career events and opportunities that introduce students to higher education and vocational training.
- Reach out to and schedule guest speakers from local businesses, colleges, and military services.
- Help coordinate Career Days, Career Month, Teen Job Fairs, and similar events when feasible.
- Work with staff and outside agencies to expand student career-learning opportunities.
Additional Conditions
- Travel is required for job-related business using a personal or organization vehicle.
- Regular attendance and punctuality are expected.
- Evening and weekend work may be required.
- Other duties may be assigned as needed.
- No supervisory responsibilities are assigned to this role.

Education and Experience
- A master’s degree in School Counseling is required.
- Prior experience as a school counselor, either through internship or employment, is required.
Licenses, Knowledge, and Other Requirements
- A Pupil Personnel Services Credential is required.
- Knowledge of the structure and components of an American School Counselor Association-aligned comprehensive counseling program.
- Ability to work effectively with low-income students and families, as well as people from diverse backgrounds.
- Strong relationship-building skills with staff, students, parents, and community members.
- Patience and empathy when listening to student concerns.
- Ability to identify student needs and provide appropriate support.
- Capability to provide personal and academic counseling in one-on-one, small group, and larger group settings.
- Understanding of counseling principles, methods, techniques, strategies, and current trends in educational, social, and emotional counseling.
- Awareness of how a school counselor functions within a broader school and professional community.
- Ability to gather and interpret data, maintain records, and prepare reports.
- Commitment to student record confidentiality.
- Ability to meet deadlines, stay accurate, and pay close attention to detail.
- Experience working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, related business software, and student information systems.
- Strong presentation, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Willingness to work non-traditional days and hours based on program needs.
- Ability to coordinate and supervise youth in a school environment while maintaining cooperative working relationships.
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multiple agencies.
- Bilingual English/Spanish or another secondary language is preferred depending on program and client needs.
- Must hold a valid California driver’s license, have reliable transportation, and maintain auto insurance that meets state law and organizational vehicle requirements.
- Must pass DOJ and Child Abuse Index fingerprint clearance and TB clearance.
Physical Requirements
This job involves regular sitting, hand use, speaking, and hearing. It also frequently requires standing, walking, and reaching. Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling may be necessary. The role requires lifting or moving up to 10 pounds regularly, up to 25 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds occasionally. Vision abilities needed include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
Work Environment
The position may occasionally involve outdoor weather exposure. The usual noise level is moderate.
