About the Role

An opportunity has opened for a highly driven Clinical Scientist registered with the HCPC to join the Scottish Microbiology Laboratories at Glasgow Royal Infirmary within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde. Candidates who hold the required qualifications and are eligible to start HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist will also be considered.

The Scottish Microbiology Reference Laboratory has an important specialist and reference-testing function covering a broad range of pathogens. Its work supports clinical decision-making, monitoring of antimicrobial resistance and vaccines, public health policy development, and outbreak response for the Scottish population. The laboratory also contributes to education and training, collaborative research and development, and works closely with Public Health Scotland and other partners involved in human and animal health in Scotland.

• Monday to Friday
• Permanent, full-time

Key Duties

• Design, apply and refine advanced phenotypic and molecular microbiology methods used in reference laboratory testing
• Support and maintain quality control and quality assurance processes so that laboratory outputs remain accurate and dependable
• Contribute to service improvement, including the introduction of new assays, methods and technologies such as whole genome sequencing
• Take part in research activity, clinical audit work and molecular development projects within the department
• Examine, interpret, validate and communicate complex laboratory findings, and provide expert clinical guidance to service users
• Teach, train and mentor medical, scientific and technical colleagues to build capability across the team
• Work with multidisciplinary teams and external stakeholders while helping deliver day-to-day operational and routine laboratory services

Required Background

Applicants are expected to have a strong academic and professional profile in a relevant scientific discipline such as medical microbiology. The post calls for either a first-class or upper second-class honours degree, a relevant master’s degree or equivalent, completion of the nationally accredited Scientific Training Programme, and HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist. Those who have the right qualifications and are eligible to begin HCPC registration may also be considered.
