Job description

About the Organization

Stand.earth is a nonprofit environmental group committed to ensuring that people and the planet are prioritized. With campaigns that challenge environmentally damaging corporate and government decisions, Stand.earth pushes for accountability and advances impactful climate solutions. Since its inception in 2000, the organization has helped protect vast wilderness areas, influenced responsible corporate purchasing decisions, and reformed environmental policies of major North American companies. Stand.earth operates throughout the U.S. and Canada, upholding the sovereignty of Indigenous Peoples and frontline communities impacted by environmental harm.

Position Overview

The Climate and Energy Campaigner will collaborate closely with the Canadian Oil and Gas Team to create, coordinate, and roll out strategies to prevent the construction of new tar sands pipelines and the increased movement of oil tankers in Canada. This contract is full-time (32 hours per week) for one year, based remotely in British Columbia, with some travel within Canada required. The role centers on supporting campaign planning, public outreach, and coalition building, especially in partnership with Indigenous and frontline communities most affected by fossil fuel expansion.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work alongside the Canadian Oil and Gas Campaign Team to develop and implement plans aimed at halting new tar sands pipeline and tanker projects.
  • Partner with Communications and Engagement teams to craft digital content and messaging strategies for campaign support.
  • Represent and speak on behalf of the campaign in media and coalitions as assigned.
  • Coordinate with partners, allies, and coalitions to align efforts and messaging.
  • Engage with frontline and Indigenous communities affected by proposed infrastructure projects.
  • Provide general support to the broader Canadian Oil and Gas Campaign Team and associated initiatives.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Direct experience in campaigning, organizing, or networking on political, environmental, or social justice initiatives.
  • Demonstrated history of designing and executing successful public advocacy campaigns.
  • Ability to foster organizing networks and plan collaborative campaigns with stakeholders from varied backgrounds.
  • Deep commitment to equity, racial justice, transparent communication, supporting impacted groups, and ongoing learning.
  • Proficient written communication in English; proficiency in French is an advantage but not mandatory.
  • Skill in rapidly absorbing complex issues and seizing strategic opportunities.
  • Motivation to challenge the fossil fuel sector and address climate change issues.
  • Preference for candidates with existing climate/community networks and strong knowledge of Western Canada’s social and political environment.
  • Experience with digital advocacy is preferred.

Additional Information

  • The contract runs for one year, up to 32 hours weekly, compensated at $50 CAD per hour.
  • This position is remote and requires a British Columbia base with willingness for occasional Canadian travel.
  • Individuals from historically marginalized groups, including Indigenous Peoples, people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, women, people with disabilities, or those from working class backgrounds are highly encouraged to apply.
  • If you need assistance with your application, support is available via email: equalopportunity@stand.earth.
