Job description

Role overview

The Claims Specialist will manage liability claims from initial review through resolution, using established claims practices and working within assigned authority limits. The position mainly covers claims valued below $500,000, including matters that are already in litigation.

Core responsibilities

  • Keep first contact within 24 hours and maintain appropriate communication with all relevant parties throughout the claim lifecycle.
  • Collect facts, interview involved individuals, take statements, research online sources when needed, and review reports and associated invoices or bills.
  • Set and adjust reserves in line with claim handling standards and guidelines.
  • Choose and coordinate outside providers such as attorneys, independent adjusters, and subject-matter experts.
  • Spot and act on subrogation, contribution, and SIU-related opportunities.
  • Negotiate and close straightforward claims with a focus on cost control and service quality.
  • Handle claims strictly within delegated authority and according to procedures and internal guidelines.
  • Escalate matters that exceed authority levels and prepare the necessary referral materials.
  • Help develop and improve claims management procedures.
  • Carry out claims processing and administrative work as needed.

Education, experience, and licensing

  • A bachelor’s degree plus at least 7 years of overall insurance industry experience, or an equivalent background, is required.
  • Equivalent experience is defined as a high school diploma plus 8 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with auto liability, general liability, garage, and transportation claims is expected.
  • Experience handling litigated claims and directing defense counsel is needed.
  • A valid license is required wherever state rules apply.
  • Professional credentials such as CPCU, AIC, SCLA, or related insurance studies are considered an advantage.
  • The role calls for strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Candidates should be able to stay organized, manage multiple priorities, and work efficiently under changing demands.
  • Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills are important.
