About the Role
The Department of Families, Seniors, Disability Services and Child Safety invites dedicated individuals to become Child Safety Officers (CSOs) in Townsville. This opportunity welcomes graduates or professionals transitioning careers with backgrounds or interests in Social Work, Human Services, Psychology, or related fields. As a CSO, you will act as an advocate for children and youth, focusing on their protection and wellbeing under the Child Protection Act 1999.
Key Duties
- Collaborate extensively with families, caregivers, and community organizations.
- Conduct statutory child protection functions, such as assessment, intervention, casework, and case management.
- Participate in court proceedings and prepare affidavits.
- Coordinate efforts with partner agencies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community groups.
- Offer culturally sensitive, respectful assistance to families from diverse cultural backgrounds.

Work Location

As part of the Townsville CSSC, your work will span picturesque regions such as Ayr, Burdekin, Magnetic Island, Ingham, Hinchinbrook, Charters Towers, Hughenden, and Palm Island, including occasional overnight trips. Townsville boasts over 300 days of sunshine annually, a robust local economy, excellent amenities, and outstanding natural landmarks including the Great Barrier Reef and Castle Hill.
Required Qualifications and Skills
- A Bachelor’s degree in Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, or an allied discipline complemented by further study or relevant experience.
- Possession of a valid Australian Driver’s License and eligibility to work in Australia.
- Familiarity with the Child Protection Act 1999 and proficient documentation skills for case notes.
- Effective communication abilities and strong skills in cultivating relationships.
