Job description

Overview

This role involves delivering developmentally suitable care and educational activities for children and youth aged 6 weeks to 18 years within Child and Youth Services programs. The assistant will oversee children's safety during daily routines, outdoor and indoor activities, field trips, and special events.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide age-appropriate developmental care and instruction for children and youth from infants to 18 years old.
  • Maintain active supervision and ensure safety of children during all program activities, including outings and special events.
  • Assist in facilitating planned activities, schedules, and routines using prepared curriculum and materials, supporting both group and individual needs.
  • Coordinate and serve appropriate snacks or meals as required.
  • React promptly to emergencies such as evacuations, illness, or physical and emotional needs.

Employment Conditions

  • Fulfill all qualification, eligibility, and background requirements, including favorable background checks.

  • Minimum age requirement of 18 years at appointment.
  • Comply with Section 231 of the Crime Control Act and related DoD instructions regarding contact with minors.
  • Required immunizations against communicable diseases according to ACIP recommendations, including influenza vaccine.
  • Must pass a pre-employment physical and ongoing physicals to confirm fitness for lifting up to 40 lbs, and physical demands such as walking, bending, stooping, and standing as needed.
  • Possess the necessary visual and auditory capacities to provide proper supervision and respond quickly.
  • Mandatory reporting of suspected child abuse or neglect.
  • Completion and maintenance of required DoW and Service training, CPR, and First Aid certifications.
  • Work schedule may include evenings, weekends, holidays, and the role requires both indoor and outdoor duties including occasional field trips.

Qualifications

Applicants must submit resumes no longer than two pages demonstrating relevant experience, skills, knowledge, and abilities. There are three qualification tiers:

  • Entry Level (CY-01): High school diploma or equivalent; at least 18 years old; effective oral and written English communication.
  • Skill Level (CY-01): All Entry Level requirements plus six months experience working with children/youth and completion of equivalent industry or Department of Defense training or six semester hours of college credits in relevant fields.
  • Target Level (CY-02): All Skill Level requirements plus one year of experience, demonstrated knowledge of child/youth development theories, plus completion of advanced training or college credits (12 semester hours) in specialized education or related behavioral sciences.

Education

A high school diploma or GED is the minimum education requirement. Documentation must be submitted in English or with translation. Advanced qualifications require supporting transcripts or certificates.
