About Environment Canterbury
Environment Canterbury, the regional council, manages natural resources such as air, soil, water, and land in partnership with mana whenua Ngāi Tahu to safeguard environmental health and prosperity for the region's future. The council operates in an adaptive way to address the region's evolving environmental and political landscape, focusing on three core services: Environmental Regulation and Protection, Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards, and Public Transport. The council actively responds to national legislation and policy developments while maintaining these essential services.
Role Overview
The Chief Scientist (GM Environmental Science) is a critical senior leadership position responsible for directing and evolving the organisation’s environmental science functions. In this role, you will lead diverse scientific teams to produce reliable research and insights that guide decision-making locally, regionally, and nationally. Operating at general manager level, you will integrate science with strategy, policy, operations, communications, and community engagement, particularly with rūnanga and local stakeholders, while fostering a high-achieving team and influencing collaborative networks.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and oversee delivery of comprehensive environmental science programs.
- Manage change effectively to ensure science outputs remain credible, respected, and accessible.
- Promote collaborative and integrated scientific approaches to support informed decision-making.
- Establish and nurture lasting partnerships with Ngāi Tahu, other stakeholders, and sector leaders.
- Serve as a trusted environmental science advisor and spokesperson.

Experience and Qualifications
- PhD in environmental science or a related field.
- Extensive experience leading scientific functions in comprehensive or large-scale organisations.
- Broad scientific expertise beyond your primary specialty.
- Recognition and respect within the scientific community.
- Demonstrated track record of influencing strategy, policy, and organisational direction through scientific and political understanding.
