The council operates in an adaptive way to address the region's evolving environmental and political landscape, focusing on three core services: Environmental Regulation and Protection, Community Preparedness and Response to Hazards, and Public Transport. The council actively responds to national legislation and policy developments while maintaining these essential services.

The Chief Scientist (GM Environmental Science) is a critical senior leadership position responsible for directing and evolving the organisation’s environmental science functions. In this role, you will lead diverse scientific teams to produce reliable research and insights that guide decision-making locally, regionally, and nationally. Operating at general manager level, you will integrate science with strategy, policy, operations, communications, and community engagement, particularly with rūnanga and local stakeholders, while fostering a high-achieving team and influencing collaborative networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage change effectively to ensure science outputs remain credible, respected, and accessible.
  • Promote collaborative and integrated scientific approaches to support informed decision-making.
  • Establish and nurture lasting partnerships with Ngāi Tahu, other stakeholders, and sector leaders.
  • Serve as a trusted environmental science advisor and spokesperson.

Candidate Profile

You are a visionary leader in science with the ability to translate strategic priorities into collaborative projects. You possess strong leadership skills to build and inspire teams, coupled with political insight and the aptitude to navigate complex issues. Your communication skills allow you to convey complex scientific concepts to varied audiences effectively. Motivated by addressing the environmental challenges of Waitaha Canterbury’s diverse landscapes, you thrive in complex environments, influence at senior levels, and foster alignment among diverse stakeholders.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Extensive experience leading scientific functions in comprehensive or large-scale organisations.
  • Broad scientific expertise beyond your primary specialty.
  • Recognition and respect within the scientific community.
