Job description
About the role
Lyft’s mission is to serve and connect, and this position supports that goal by helping create a workplace where people feel they belong and can do their best work. Reporting to the Chief Policy Officer, the Chief of Staff will act as a trusted strategic partner, helping push forward the policy team’s most important initiatives while improving operating discipline across planning, budget management, headcount tracking, and team coordination.
This opportunity is suited to someone who can lead across functions, make sound decisions under pressure, solve complex problems, and manage competing priorities while advancing the Chief Policy Officer’s agenda.
What you will do
- Run day-to-day operations and strategic planning, including administrative approvals, task prioritization, executive schedule coordination, preparation and review of leadership materials, weekly and quarterly reporting, annual planning and budgeting, and ongoing review of the organization structure.
- Share priorities, updates, and outcomes with the broader organization while helping ensure commitments are delivered on time.
- Strengthen the organization by identifying capability gaps, improving workflows, and aligning internal processes.
- Build a strong understanding of Product, Operations, Legal, Finance, and broader business strategy, then use that context to support the Chief Policy Officer by running weekly team meetings, planning and facilitating team offsites, and finding ways to improve leadership effectiveness.
- Partner with the Chief Policy Officer and the Public Policy leadership team as a strategic advisor.
- Monitor team morale and culture, acting as a close observer for the Chief Policy Officer and creating both informal and formal feedback channels to surface unmet needs.
- Take ownership of special projects so emerging or unexpected issues are addressed before they are overlooked.
- Collect and interpret data to uncover insights, spot trends, and support executive-level decision-making.
- Work with leaders across People, Finance, and other functions to improve employee satisfaction, headcount efficiency, professional development, facilities planning, and related priorities.
Experience and capabilities
- Strong background in strategic planning, process improvement, project management, financial planning, organizational change, and internal communications.
- Comfort working across the business and product areas, understanding changing needs, and helping executives make decisions quickly.
- At least 7 years of experience across operations, product management, strategy, finance, consulting, government, or a similar field.
- Low-ego, low-drama approach with the judgment to support a busy executive and anticipate the needs of their direct team.
- Demonstrated ability to manage multiple simultaneous priorities and deliver them successfully, using data and metrics to communicate needs like a business owner.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence and collaborate across functions and seniority levels.
- Entrepreneurial mindset, adaptability, comfort with ambiguity and complexity, and the ability to work effectively with limited resources.
- Proven success leading strategic planning in a growth-stage company.
- Strong financial capability, including budgeting and financial model analysis.
- Prior experience supporting staffing decisions or working closely with C-suite/SVP leaders on a regular basis.
- High integrity, trustworthiness, and proven ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
Benefits
- Medical, dental, and vision coverage, with additional programs available to enrolled employees.
- Mental health support.
- Family-building support.
- Child care and pet-related benefits.
- 401(k) plan with company match.
- 12 observed holidays, plus discretionary paid time off for salaried employees and 15 days of paid time off for hourly employees.
- 18 weeks of paid parental leave for biological, adoptive, and foster parents.
- Subsidized commuter benefits.
- Monthly Lyft credits and a complimentary Lyft Pink membership.
Work arrangement
This is a hybrid position based in Washington, DC. Team members are expected in the office three days per week: Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
