Job description
About the Company
Join a well-established New Zealand engineering business that is entering an ambitious phase of expansion. The group operates across more than one jurisdiction in a highly specialised market, with growth expected through organic development, entry into new markets, and strategic acquisitions.
This is a senior leadership opportunity for a commercially minded finance executive who is eager to shape capability, reinforce governance, and help evolve the organisation from SME-style reporting into a more sophisticated, audit-ready group finance function.
The Role
Reporting to the CEO/Managing Director, you will be part of the Senior Leadership Team and take full ownership of the finance function across a complex multi-entity group operating in New Zealand and Australia. The remit includes financial operations, strategic planning, treasury, taxation, reporting, systems, and governance, while serving as a trusted advisor to the executive team and board.
The position gives you meaningful input into strategy, capital deployment, margin improvement, and the company’s long-term growth agenda.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the group’s financial operations, reporting, cashflow, and treasury activities.
- Prepare clear and useful monthly management reports and board packs.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting, financial planning, and business performance analysis.
- Work closely with the CEO and leadership team on strategic choices and growth plans.
- Oversee the move to NZ IFRS reporting and statutory audit obligations.
- Handle banking relationships, funding arrangements, and covenant monitoring.
- Direct taxation, transfer pricing, trust structures, and compliance across multiple jurisdictions.
- Establish scalable controls, governance practices, and finance processes.
- Drive finance transformation projects, including ERP evaluation and implementation.
- Coach and develop the finance team while contributing as a core member of the SLT.
Candidate Profile
To succeed in this role, you will bring strong technical expertise, commercial judgement, and hands-on leadership experience. You should be comfortable operating in a growth environment and balancing strategy with execution.
- CAANZ qualification plus extensive experience after qualification.
- Background as a CFO, Finance Director, or senior finance leader in a multi-entity organisation.
- Proven success supporting a business through substantial growth.
- Strong capability in group consolidations, multi-currency operations, and complex reporting.
- Experience leading a business through statutory reporting and audit transition.
- Solid understanding of New Zealand tax rules and financial reporting standards.
- Working knowledge of Australian accounting and tax requirements.
- Practical experience with transfer pricing, intercompany arrangements, and trust administration.
- A balance of strategic thinking and hands-on delivery.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Experience in engineering, manufacturing, industrial services, or project-based environments is highly desirable.
- ERP implementation and finance transformation experience would be an advantage.
Additional Information
This is not a maintenance-style CFO role. The business is looking for a proactive finance leader who can help build the next stage of the organisation’s finance capability and support growth over the coming years.
