Job description

Role Overview

This position is for a laboratory chemist responsible for supporting shift operations and ensuring accurate testing, reporting, and control of samples in a plant environment. The role covers routine analytical work, calibration, data entry, compliance, and coordination with multiple internal teams.

Key Accountabilities

  • Assist the shift in charge with day-to-day shift coordination activities.
  • Organize and prioritize samples for testing based on urgency and operational needs.
  • Arrange the correct sample containers, identify the right carriers for sample movement, and set the proper pre-testing storage location.
  • Check that chemicals and standards used for analysis are fit for use, then carry out testing by strictly following the prescribed procedure.
  • Verify test outcomes using validation methods before sharing results.
  • Identify required calibrations as defined by the method protocol and instrument schedule.
  • Prepare calibration standards and working standards as needed.
  • Carry out calibrations according to the method and equipment schedule, and standardize laboratory solutions.
  • Assess the performance of additives and process chemicals.
  • Collect raw material samples as required and monitor the quality of incoming materials.
  • Complete timely analysis and reporting for raw materials, in-process samples, finished products, and troubleshooting samples across plants.
  • Classify product grades according to specification requirements.
  • Spot test deviations or unusual results and flag exceptions.
  • Take immediate corrective action in emergency situations under the guidance of the section head.
  • Maintain proper sample retention as per laboratory procedure to support customer-related issue handling when needed.
  • Dispose of leftover samples safely in line with SOPs and coordinate with plant teams and other agencies for follow-up actions.
  • Work with laboratory quality system requirements and use LIMS and SAP QM effectively in daily lab operations.
  • Maintain laboratory inventory such as reagents, glassware, and equipment, and raise requirements in time to ensure availability.
  • Take part in audits related to laboratory quality systems, including safety audits.
  • Ensure test results are entered and approved in LIMS on time.
  • Stay updated on environmental, site, and statutory regulations.
  • Handle chemicals and equipment in line with safety requirements.
  • Keep the laboratory clean, orderly, and safe.
  • Follow and enforce applicable HSE procedures and practices.
  • Provide on-the-job training to analysts and new joiners on laboratory analysis work.
  • Provide on-the-job training to analysts and new joiners on laboratory safety.
  • Participate in external training programs and events as directed by the section head.
  • Deliver assigned tasks within timelines even when plans change unexpectedly.
  • Coordinate effectively with business teams, customers, operations, E&M, and HSEF stakeholders.
  • Manage sample handling and prioritize work assignments efficiently.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of laboratory testing procedures and calibration practices.
  • Practical knowledge of quality systems and compliance requirements in a laboratory setting.
  • Hands-on experience with LIMS and SAP QM is preferred for daily lab activities.
  • Ability to manage samples, lab inventory, and reporting with accuracy and speed.
  • Good awareness of safety, HSE practices, and laboratory housekeeping standards.
  • Capability to work across multiple interfaces and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Experience in QA/QC discipline for 5 to 7 years.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry; a master’s degree is preferred.
